W-House in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by VMX Architects BV

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Article source: VMX Architects BV

The Walta-Elmers family commissioned VMX Architects to design their house on ‘Kleine Rieteiland’, one of the islands of IJburg. The client wanted a spacious, open house with plenty of light. The plot measures 8 by 30 metres. By studying several models, the concept of ‘woonlandschap’ (living-landscape) was chosen. The ground floor, containing the living and kitchen, in a split level typology, has the possibility to completely open to the outside and thereby create a partly covered living-landscape of 8 by 30 metres.

Bent in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Studio Chris Kabel

Article source: Studio Chris Kabel

Façade for a residential building by Abbink X de Haas architects and housing cooperation de Key in the center of Amsterdam. Aluminum sheets are perforated with a pattern that allows the shapes to be bent up or down. When bent up the surface catches the (sun)light and bent down the surface is shaded. In this way intricate graphics can be applied onto the building with punch perforated panels without the use of expensive laser cutting. Bent turns shadow into ink.

SODAE House in Amsterdam, Netherlands by VMX Architects

Saturday, October 20th, 2012

Article source: VMX Architects

The SODAE-House is the house of the architect. The site is a private island at an intersection of waterways, south of Amsterdam. It is one of the precious pieces of unspoiled polder landscape, left open just outside the city. If the current trend of rapid urbanisation continues, it will soon be one of the last pieces of characteristic Dutch landscape in this part of the Netherlands. It is the choice of this particular spot, that is to say the perception of the landscape, which has dictated the character of the design.
