Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Hotel in The Netherlands by Mecanoo

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Article source: Mecanoo

Iconic appearance
The new Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol hotel is situated in a prominent location alongside the access roads to the international airport terminal. Because the hotel is twisted from the plinth by 45 degrees, one of the facades faces the Ceintuurbaan. This gives the hotel not only momentum, but also a visual connection with the office strip. The building is the final chord of the staccato rhythm of the WTC towers and a welcoming icon to both the Schiphol boulevard and the Ceintuurbaan. The hotel, which features a cubic design and round edges, will differ subtly from its surroundings in both shape and facade. All surrounding buildings at the airport, mainly office buildings, have orthogonal organized facades.

Rieteiland House in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Hans van Heeswijk Architects

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Article source: Hans van Heeswijk Architects

We all occasionally fantasize about our dream home, but few of us ever manage to make it a reality. And how does the architect himself live? In this case, the private home of architect Hans van Heeswijk led to a spacious and light-filled house full of special details. The client and architect Van Heeswijk was encouraged not to settle for off-the-peg solutions. Instead, he seized the opportunity to work to a higher level of ambition in terms of how to use energy, how to maximize the potential of technology, how to respond to the context, and how to stretch the limits of what is possible. The result is a real machine for living in.

Atelier Havoc Milk in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by FLAT Architects

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Article source: FLAT Architects

A reinterpretation of the ateliers on the Zomerdijkstraat
Atelier Havoc Milk has been constructed on a scale 1 : 2 as part of the exhibition atelier Malkovich concerning the future atelier. Instead of starting from scratch, the design is all about the reinterpretation of the monumental atelier/habitats on the Zomerdijkstraat in Amsterdam (1932-1934). The archetypical atelier with its high ceilings and northern light has got great qualities. The ateliers on the Zomerdijkstraat possess these qualities and rest on a famous artist’s tradition. It would be a shame to ignore this archetypical monument when building an atelier for the future.

Stills Flagship store in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Doepel Strijkers

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

Article source: Doepel Strijkers

On the Cornelis Schuijtstraat in Amsterdam a flagship store has been realized for the label Stills. The spatial interventions in the hull, which visually connects the floors, are not emphasized by smoothing them but has been kept visible to show additions and finishing layers over time. There is a base from which the original shop and its transformations over time remained visible. This pattern of textures in the existing building is complemented by an object. A spatial translation based on the values of the label.

The Whale in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Frits van Dongen, de Architekten Cie.

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Article source: Frits van Dongen, de Architekten Cie.

Borneo-Sporenburg, a former harbour area along the shores of the IJ near Amsterdam’s inner city is intended to resemble in its density the Jordaan, a lively Amsterdam inner city quarter. The developers, however, requested a suburban programme from the municipality. This was granted on the condition that the required density of 100 dwellings per hectare would be achieved. To achieve this urban concentration in a suburban programme, Adriaan Geuze of West 8 introduced a fresh typology: inspired by the surrounding water, he created a sea of low-rise buildings, given rhythm by the variation of blocks and open spaces.

Fort Cortina in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Karelse & den Besten

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Article source: Karelse & den Besten

As a graphic design agency we already had a long cooperation with Cortina, a wholesale in gift items, before they asked us to design their new headquarters. It was our first architectural assignment.  Fort Cortina is built on the premises of the NDSM-wharf, a former shipyard located on the banks of the river IJ in Amsterdam. In this harsh environment we designed an office and warehouse building that looks like a Morrocan fort. A monolithic structure, rough on the outside with metallized brick walls and smooth on the inside patios that are lined with cedar wood.
