Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Article source: Atelier Kempe Tthill

The project is under construction at the edge of Bijlmerpark in the central area of Amsterdam-Zuidoost and is used as a housing complex for drug-addicted. As a typology it is very similar to a classical hotel. Small individual units of a size between 15-25m2 are surrounding a very generous lobby used as the central activity space for a group of up to 50 inhabitants. This “collective living room” has a beautiful rooflight and enjoys nice views on the park. On the top of this space is a little courtyard placed, offering the inhabitant’s an intimate outside space covered by the Amsterdam sky.

SOCIAL CONDENSER

Youth- and neighbourhood centre “De hood” in Amsterdam-Osdorp, 2011

In the garden city

Osdorp grew during the extension of the city of Amsterdam after the Second World War on the basis of the urban plan of De Stijl – architect Cornelis van Eesteren. Since the nineties, a large urban renewal project is in progress in which the poorly maintained buildings are subsequently demolished and are replaced by new ones.  An attempt is made to eliminate the urban problems of the CIAM planning while nevertheless maintaining its qualities. One of these qualities is the green, lush areas between the building blocks.

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

In Osdorp, southwest of Amsterdam, major changes took place to transform a vacant zone into a residential district connected to the existing housing area alongside it. One part of the residential district is a public garden, Jan van Zutphenplantsoen, where the four towers stand along a newly created water-park. All four towers are sited according to the given urban footprint and take up the maximum envelope, giving a total of 390 apartments evenly distributed over 11 levels.

WSTLND in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by NL Architects

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Article source: NL Architects

The Westlandgracht is a relatively unknown, but beautiful canal in the West of Amsterdam. It is located close to the World Fashion Center but still within the ring road A10. This canal has a surprising characteristic: at one point it expands into a giant pond, or a small lake. Our client discovered that the zoning law allows for a small restaurant to be build here. A strategic location: wonderful scenery combined with infrastructure. It is positioned at one of the radial roads from the center into the western expansions.

Interpolis, ’t Laar in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by NL architects

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Article source: NL architects

Information Technology allows us to re-think the way we work. Working becomes potentially independent from time and place. The insurance company Interpolis has together with Veldhoen Company developed a revolutionary and radical office concept, called ‘Helder Werken’. The central idea is that employees no longer need a fixed workspace. Potentially any place becomes a place to work. They are allowed to choose from numerous high quality rooms and spaces that are optimized for the nature of their business at each point in time. You can take your laptop and cell phone and find a place under a tree, if you want, or go home, or work in the car, or use the ‘clubhouses’ that are especially designed for you. Flex.

Modern Houseboat in Amsterdam, Netherlands by +31Architects

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

This tautly designed houseboat floats in the Amstel river of Amsterdam. The design has, unlike most floating houses, a very contemporary design without losing the characteristic appearance of the typical houseboat. The clients get a lot of positive reactions. It sometimes happens that people who pass by boat knock on the windows and ask if they can enter the boat.

In this framework De Bomentuin is a small scale project, that is fitted in the neighborhood with modesty and carefulness.
