The Wedge house is a custom-built single family home located in the northern suburbs of Athens, in the mountainous and full of pine trees area of Penteli, named Drafi. The site is quite distinctive and has many challenging features. The main complexity is the steep terrain with an almost 20-meter-height-difference from one side of the site to the other. The virtually vertical cliffs on both edges made access very difficult, so when a mild inclined surface appeared in the middle of the site it was quite inevitable that the house would be situated there.

This project redefines the mixed-use housing typology of the “polykatoikia”, ubiquitous in Greek cities, in one of the most dense urban neighborhoods of Athens’ center, Patissia. An L-shaped plan is dictated by site orientation and adjacent building mass, creating a small garden to the South. The vertical arrangement of different programs, typically integrated behind a uniform facade of duplicate floors, is articulated here as a “sectional” facade: individual floor levels appear to extend different lengths along the street, varying the relationship of closed to open space at each floor. Along the street, the mass of the building is lifted to provide broad visual access to the private garden, and allow room for two vehicles. At each level of the building, an exterior or transparent space \”bridges\” the street to the backyard along the East party line, whereas the most sheltered interior spaces are concentrated along the opposite party line. This results in a double strategy. On the one hand, the careful manipulation of the building code incorporates a pilotis, a pergola and covered outdoor spaces, creating a porous civic facade that subverts the requirement for the building’s mass to continue that of its neighbors. On the other hand, the near-absence of protruding balconies brings the building’s interior closer to the realm of the street.
For the Passaggio project our firm had to design a cocktail restaurant, which would be completely different from what we usually encounter. The clients requested a truly innovative and out of the box design, that would bring together elements of nature whilst achieving perfect harmony between the natural elements and the crowded metropolis.

In the region of Kifissia, a three-storey house is renovated and decorated proposing a new lifestyle. Linear blinds act as a unifying element of space, while individual functional units are formed: espresso point, breakfast, living room. Boundaries are expanding due to the view of the garden and the surrounding area, where a swimming-pool is going to be constructed. Textures, colors and shapes are being juxtaposed, creating a game of contrasts and reflections. Warm wooden textures and smooth vertical surfaces co-exist, giving space a unique identity. Horizontal leather blinds filter natural light and determine outdoor views, allowing space to evolve during the day.
