Rethinking the tradition of municipal public housing in Vienna

The Kapellenhof project is coming to Vienna’s 22nd district: 450 new residential units around a shared urban grove.

In collaboration with three residential developers, Migra, Neues Leben, and Wogem, AllesWirdGut and feld72 won the developer’s competition for the construction of 450 apartments on Kapellenweg with a concept informed by the tradition-honored Viennese municipal public housing estate, a clear and confident ensemble laid out around a large communal courtyard: this is the Kapellenhof estate.

House Sch in Bregenz, Austria by Dietrich | Untertrifaller

Friday, February 3rd, 2017

Article source: Dietrich | Untertrifaller

Built on an extremely steep piece of land with an area of only 450m², Dietrich│Untertrifaller designed this single family home to best fit the constraints of the site. While a black painted concrete core ties the house to the hill and contains all service rooms, a more open wooden structure was chosen for the living area and bedrooms. The form of the home allows for the focal point of all the interior spaces to be the forests and the Rhine valley below.

Funder Werk 3 in Sankt Veit an der Glan, Austria by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU

Sunday, January 8th, 2017

Article source: COOP HIMMELB(L)AU

Industrial culture can only come about when existing economic and functional practical constraints are successfully transformed into multidimensional design.

The Funder Werk factory building, a paper coating factory, is functionally determined by the process of production. It was to be metamorphosed into “expressive architecture.” The design concept was based on the idea of dismantling the production hall into sculpturally shaped elements. During the design process, the power station with its chimneys, the media bridge, the flying roof, the office and laboratory areas, and the entrances emerged as differentiated, interconnected architectural elements that endow the complex as a whole with an unmistakable head and body. The playful sculptural evocation of the power station with the “dancing chimneys,” the media bridge as a connection between energy and production, the free design of the flying roof as “wings,” the shaped canopies of the entrances, and the corner of the laboratory and office areas dissolved in glass towards the south, all stand out against the hall, which has been consciously kept white and simple.

Absam Primary School in Austria by Schenker Salvi Weber

Friday, December 23rd, 2016

Article source: Schenker Salvi Weber

All moved in! The extension of the primary school in the Tyrolean municipality of Absam was completed in September 2016. After one-and-a-half years of construction, kids are now frolicking around in the two-story kindergarten. The first sport classes are already taking place in the triple gymnasium, and sweet sounds are floating down from the new music school under the roof of the historic primary school building.

There wasn’t much space for the new building in the 7000-person community of Absam, the “village of the Olympians” in the Hall-Wattens region, just 20 minutes by car from Innsbruck. So the architects Schenker Salvi Weber – the only ones among the 20 competition participants – decided to situate the sports hall underground and, for structural reasons, build the two-story kindergarten atop in a lightweight wood frame construction.

Tax Consultancy Office in Vienna, Austria by Söhne & Partner architects

Friday, December 23rd, 2016

Article source: Söhne & Partner architects

Often, the most exciting thing to see when entering a tax consultancy office it the latest edition of a law book. For one renowned tax consultancy office these days are over: it transforms its reception into a welcoming, comfortable lobby.

While planning the reconstruction of the entire office space, the redesign of the reception and the meeting rooms was announced in a small architectural competition. We were able to convince the jury of our unusual design, which so far has been particularly popular with high-class hotels. Now we are able to implement our ideas of an unconventional tax consultancy design in the look of a feel-good hotel lobby.

Headquarter SVA in Vienna, Austria by HOLODECK architects

Wednesday, December 21st, 2016

Article source: HOLODECK architects

The headquarter of the main association of the Austrian Social Insurance Fund is located in the third district, at Erdbergstrasse. The Wittgensteinhaus, the Rochusmarkt and the Grete Jostpark are important cultural buildings and urban areas arranged during site construction in 70s. In this high-quality context, we carefully place a spatial composition of the landscape park and building cubature. The vertical slice is proportionally supplemented by a horizontal slab and integrated the existing landscape park spatially and functionally. The inviting ground floor zone reaches the users and visitors over the extensive open space with shade-spreading trees or over the entrance along the Kundmanngasse. The naturally exposed hall provides a clear orientation and access to the areas.

Krieau.viertel zwei plus in Vienna, Austria by HOLODECK architects

Tuesday, December 20th, 2016

Article source: HOLODECK architects

The concept of urban development is based on the landscape of open spaces with trees (historical Prater landscape) and the building units positioned in it. The sequence of built-up and undeveloped space is the result of the rhythm of several parameters including: spatial edges, rough-determining distances, orientation and interspaces. Due to the bridge connections in airy heights, eye-to-eye connections are maintained and a diversified movement with different room coverings along the lively ground floor zone is given. Places, meadows, landscapes accompany the residents, users and visitors on the fast way through or during a leisurely walk through the district of Zwei Plus. The difference between open spaces and differently equipped places takes place in addition to the adjacent buildings and the surroundings. Use: car parking, green campus with offices, dormitories and residential studios.

Headquarter Post AG in Vienna, Austria by HOLODECK architects

Saturday, December 17th, 2016

Article source: HOLODECK architects

The new headquarters of the Austrian Post AG is embedded in the urban context by inclusion of surrounding buildings, urban street connections and local conditions. Additionally, the building is structurally complemented by the public space and the courtyards. Different roof top gardens on the 6th floor and several terraces on some floors offer the employees inspiration and recovery. The integration in the urban context is guided by the intention to take in consideration the surrounding existing buildings’ typologies, the street connections with the 3rd Viennese district as well as several local data. The construction body takes shape in relation with the surrounding building blocks with inner courts, the existing telecom building, the neighbouring apartment house AMS, low rise buildings and the Grete-Jost-Park.
