THE POWER OF MEMORY

The backbone of the architectural strategy for the extension project of the Fine Arts Museum in Badajoz is meant to regain an Identity: a new built environment (Architecture) that interacts with the urban context (City) through its cultural content (Museum).

We project a complex whose starting point is the expansion of the existing museum, located in a listed building in the center of Badajoz. The complex includes two new buildings that are connected through a courtyard and are opened to two different streets of the city. Due to the difficult circumstances that come together in this place (archaeological remains, party walls and the rehabilitation of the listed building) a powerful and coherent architectural response is required.

CID Center in Badajoz, Spain by NGNP arquitectos

The plot is located in the urban edge of the small town of Calamonte, on a land platform that visually dominates the surrounding farmland. From this location, which gives it a special value in the city-field-landscape relationship, leave the main formal and conceptual decisions that inspire the project. Furthermore, the presence of the building far from the road access routes, also causes the building necessarily respond to them. Therefore, the roof emerges as the fundamental element of the design. Seen from afar, the building completes its compact presence thanks to it, dialoguing with the landscape of hills surrounding the place. Close-up view, the roof provides greater height spaces that require it, such as the assembly hall, likewise providing dynamism and special character to interior environment. The compactness of the volume required an abstract formalization. The building is implanted in the plot adapting to its longitudinal form. The generator concept of the plant is the opening of a crack-patio in its central axis, which runs through its entire length, becoming the main space of the project. In the north façade, this crack configures the public access between volumes, and after passing the vestibule, continues characterized as a more introspective space. The required program, consisting of administrative uses of support to entrepreneurs, is organized with the highest programmatic rationality and economy of circulation, guaranteeing the required flexibility. Uses are grouped into three clearly differentiated units: the business incubator, support offices and meeting rooms, arranged around the central lobby, center of gravity of the building that facilitates the quick orientation of the visitor. This zoning of the small building solves the problem of the compatibility of use in function of the different schedules that each zone has. Thus, an entrepreneur can have night access to his office without having to open the entire building, which makes it much safer to use.

I used to live in a college for so many years. There the students were distributed in sunny rooms or darkness rooms. Due to I never got the needed status and college prestige, I could never be moved to the sunny rooms. It seemed that students from these sunny rooms were happier and with better color as we used to have painful look.

Article source: Arquitectos Ayala

The new bridge of Villanueva de la Serena is located on the EX-351 road, which crosses the river Guadiana, right next to the entrance into the town. It is set in a rural landscape that shows a lot of human intervention and in which we find some civil infrastructures and vegetation not planted by man’s hand.

Rowing Center in Alange, Spain by José María Sánchez García

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Article source: José María Sánchez García

The Rowing and Canoeing Centre is located near the Alange reservoir and tries to be as neutral as possible with the environment.  It is configured by a large pedestal and a light deck, creating between them a platform that dialogues with the landscape, looking over the water, the shore, the boats. It’s like a big veranda, a balcony, which focuses on the movements toward the reservoir, with paths that are created to “look” and to “stay”.

RG House in Badajoz, Spain by Estudio Arquitectura Hago, S.L.

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

Article source: Estudio Arquitectura Hago, S.L.

The main reason that unleashes any architectural proposal is the client. His needs and questions provide the project with some ideas that will be present in any space of the building.

RG House was built in order to solve the difficulties of a large family. Questions and needs arise from the way in which this large family should live together in yet to be defined space. The idea of a different common space (special and recognizable) as a complement of the rest of the modular units (bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen) that complete the program of the house prevails in the whole project.
