“Refurbishment in Sarrià” in Barcelona, Spain by Sergi Pons architects

Saturday, April 16th, 2016

Article source: Sergi Pons architects

We find ourselves on ground floor of a building constructed in the year 1930, in the historical centre of Sarrià, a district in the upper part of Barcelona. It was a well-known establishment, since it had been a confectionary shop in the neighbourhood for many years.

The exhibition tells the public the history of one hundred years of the School of Library Science in Catalonia since the founding moment with Prat de la Riba and the conception of Eugeni d’Ors, his defining moment in the Commonwealth of Catalonia, their stages of continuity in both military dictatorships, to its positioning in the educational landscape of democracy. Nonetheless, its main idea is to convey the ability to renew of this profession and therefore their educational environment within the context of the University of Barcelona, being today a dynamic and future focused profession, linked to the many changes that occur around books and records management.

Madeleine Mon Amour in Barcelona, Spain by Egue y Seta

Thursday, March 31st, 2016

Article source: Egue y Seta

The whole concept was named after a French girl (Madeleine), a place where to offer delicious pastries hand made by “grandma” to a bunch of ladies who like to take their tea every afternoon, or a champagne cocktail at night. The challenge was to create a very intimate atmosphere with an elegant but cosy ambiance, and references given by the client went from all too girly lingerie shops to the very romantic “budoir” interior design style of the “belle époque”. In short, we were about to tackle our “most feminine” task so far, and didn’t know if we needed to start wearing high heels so to bring out all of our “pink power” or if it was better altogether to pass on the challenge to a curvy and sensitive colleague. We went for the first option and after a few months of renovation project and execution we can proudly say we can now tell the difference between fuchsia, magenta, purple red, or French violet…!

Europan 13 Community, a sustainable building in Barcelona, Spain by Archilea architecture

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Article source: Archilea architecture

The strategy: The project stems from the desire to decline the concept of sustainability, specific in this competition, in three distinct areas: environmental sustainability, social sustainability and economic sustainability. The stated goal is to create a system in which the three fields can interact and integrate in order to reach equilibrium without one of the three areas of the system, which normally happens, can take precedence over others. To create this system, one of the aspects taken into consideration was the ability to move away from the traditional housing system in which the threshold of building represents a limit insideoutside trying to include in the own building a whole series of activities that can aggregate functions and increase the opportunities to meet and socialize the inhabitants. The basic idea is that the internal layout of the building is transformed into a “public square” open to the outside integrating, as mentioned, functions traditionally handled from outside and defining the building, in fact, as an hybrid: this combination of features provides the possibility to the residents of the building to meet, socialize and discuss transforming the whole neighborhood in a community, overcoming the possible socio-economic and cultural-linguistic differences.

The building constitutes a longitudinal prism, forming a screen, with vertical corbels on the façade which stand out like white keys on a black background. The ground floor emulates a great aquarium, with independent sections for the various uses, beneath an undulating ceiling of circumferences.

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016

Article source: H ARQUITECTES

Strategies

The school is located in the urban city center of Sabadell, in a corner shaped by two buildings aligned to the street. Both volumes create a wide courtyard with a sports center located in the basement.

The proposal involves only the oldest building (1959) which hosts the pre-school classrooms and few outdoor spaces.

The essential strategy consists on taking advantage of the huge potential of the original building, both the constructed surfaces as well as the useful spaces.
