An Art Container – Instead of creating certain atmosphere forexhibition, in this case, we emphasize the connection between the subject and object.
The original architecture is Victorian style with Western-style gardens, as an overly makeup woman, is outdated. The owner intended to transform its function into an art space for the public using. Our first step is to remove all the decorations from her, to show her purely look.
Disharmony is what has happened in this project: an imitated aspect from a mighty culture without its core. For instance, the Victorian building without its cultural base, the only thing it has is symbol which needs to be reconsider and to be released. In short, what we aim to approach in this project is to make disharmony from disharmony. As a result, the building would be back to the original context, a spatial container.
My name is Nolan Chao. I am an architect and I was born and now live in Beijing. Took on this home space design because it has an interesting look at the typology of concept and space design for the public stereotypes of home space design it is difficult to bring in any kind of freshness.
The BeiJing couple came to discuss with me told me that they need a different way of living, maybe just like living in “hutong” (and only two of them and pets live here).
Beijing has a growing demand for places to host different kinds of events. As a city in rapid transformation from an industrial heritage into the service sector, it requires spaces to hold business meetings, product presentations and leisure activities. In the past, hotels offered ballrooms for formal events, while industrial compounds did the same for less formal activities. However, neither hotels nor industrial compounds can offer installations suitable to the current demands of companies, due to the static appearance of the first and the lack of adequacy of the latter. Modern companies and organizations prefer spaces with dynamic and integral features.
After series D of financing –worth 133 million dollars– at the end of 2017, the Mafengwo Travel Network has come a step closer to fully develop into a comprehensive service provider in the international tourism industry. Even more, an update on the brand’s image achieved the ultimate definition of spiritual freedom: “never stop learning, never settle for habit”. Such a statement has also become relevant to the design requirements for Phase II of Mafengwo’s Global Headquarters, and SYN Architecture has brought them to life with creativity and consolidation.
The Hongkun Financial Valley Project is located in Xihongmen, Daxing District, Beijing. The overall plan is designed with “the office oxygen bar “ as concept to create a pleasant garden-style office environment with an area of 80,592 square meters and a construction area of 145,158 square meters.
“Layering Yard” is hidden in a traditional commercial block near the Qianmen of Beijing, with an area of about 500 square meters. The original architecture was a quadrangle courtyard commercial building with the characteristics of houses in the Republican period. Compared with residential houses, the houses here are bigger and higher. There is a row of arched doors and windows on the south along the street, and two-story houses on the north. Before the renovation, the housing structure was completely rebuilt; with the courtyard there were no doors, windows or walls, but exposed rough wooden structure beams. It is said that it was a brothel in the Republican period, then transformed into a bakery after the foundation of China, and later was left unused after the reconstruction. In the future, the building will be a complex for public activities and living. Therefore, while improving the quality of construction and infrastructure, this renovation focused on creating experience in particular scenes based on the Hutong environment, aiming to attract urban population who have increasingly diversified consumption demands.
This multi-function hall is located at the center of the architectural complex of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and has always been one of the largest single-storey indoor spaces in the academy. Before the renovation, it was a school history museum, but the original interior space was too old to be used for modern teaching. On the occasion of the academy’s 100th anniversary in 2018, a series of adjustments were made inside the campus, then this architecture was transformed to a multi-function hall, which is now mainly used as an art exhibition hall for daily teaching, meanwhile, it can be a place to hold different activities, such as large meetings and performances for teachers and students.
Louis Kahn has said that if you fill your mind with something that does not belongs to you, they would never stay in your brain; you would forget them, and you would lose the awareness of defining your self-worth. His spirit in the architecture has been summarized by John Lobell in the book Between Silence and Light.
In my point of view, Louis Kahn has found a calm answer for each question he asked in architecture. He never went with the flow but thought more about design and himself. As a designer, the most important thing is to think beyond the box and create new possibility, not always stay stereotyped or even duplicate work from others.
