Project Background: Located in Beijing traditional Hutong district, the project’s structure space is an “L” shaped neighbourhood, 450 square metres large. Currently, the space has five old traditional houses and temporary corroded steel houses. The building, which originally hosted company business meetings before going dormant due to poor management will be transformed to a tea café. The tea café will be an ample place for people to read while enjoying their tea time. Additionally, the café will also serve individual dining guests.
As Wang Changling–a renowned poet of the Tang Dynasty– illustrated in his work Shige (Chinese for Poetical Patterns), the art of writing a poem involves three individual layers: landscape description as the physical layer; inception of emotions from the landscape as the emotional layer; and the expression of one’s own emotions as the emphatic layer. The integration of these three layers into the shaping of space is a refined interpretation that suits perfectly the tier-by-tier progressive atmosphere created for the COFCO Ruifu Residence.

This master plan project located in the Dongcheng District transforms the existing 16.5 ha site into a sustainable high density mixed-used urban park. A one-of-a-kind multi-level pedestrian link cuts through a typical Beijing block linking two major roads, metro and train stations. Office and SOHO towers, hotels, services apartments, and exclusive luxury residential towers emerge from a dune-like topography where shopping and cultural activities weave into a series of plazas, event spaces and sunken gardens.
Penda has been commissioned by the Beijing-based property developer Hongkun to lay out a concept for its café brand Home Café with potential to spread it throughout China. The café chain will incorporate various concept versions to offer spaces to breathe in heavily polluted areas of China. Two debut locations opened its doors in Beijing and Tianjin. With air pollution being a major issue in Chinese cities, Penda decided to create a café for visitors to take a deep breath of clean air.
