This single-family house is located in Nazareth, a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders. It is situated in a street with a variety of housing typologies near by a big natural pond. The site has a great depth running from the permitted building zone up to an area of trees and dense vegetation in the back.
The house of the family, built in 1730, is located in the valley of Lustin (Belgium) at the border of a dead end street, next to a huge forest. The plot, an area of 3600 meters square, is strongly undulated. On one side of the land you have the house, and on the other side the forest. Between them, flows a river. The landscape is full of vegetation and is highlighted by grass, trees, an orchard, a vegetable garden and an apiary.
The task was to transform a 4 floor’s single-family house into two apartments. Therefore, the challenge was to provide separate circulation and outdoor spaces to each dwelling. For this purpose, an extension volume has been built. Its exterior walls are cladded with lozenge tiles, commonly used to cover gable facades.

Around 25 staff is working for Accountancy Service in the new office building.
The plot has a level difference across twelve meters: the garden lies approximately 90cm lower than the front garden strip at street level. This natural slope was incorporated into the design for the new office building. It was decided not to use the garden for parking; parking is accommodated below the building. By raising the volume of the new structure marginally from street level, space was created without the need for a deep excavation. This allows all-round daylight to penetrate the car and bicycle parking level and gives the impression that the building is floating.
