Backstay Hostel Ghent in Belgium by a154

Wednesday, December 24th, 2014

Article source: a154

THE ASSIGNMENT
The construction of student housing and redevelopment of a protected interbellum period building in order to create a hostel.

THE LOCATION
The construction site is located in the heart of Ghent’s student neighborhood. The area is demarcated by rear facades and the gardens belonging to surrounding buildings. The only access to this inner area is along the street called ‘Sint Pietersnieuwstraat’. This entrance is characterized, in particular, by the office building ‘Het Licht’ (the light), erected in 1930, drawn by architects Fernand and Maxime Brunfaut. An 18th century building stands next to this light-giving city beacon and it too needs to be preserved and restored.

THE CORTEN HOUSE in Kontich, Belgium by DMOA architecten

Thursday, November 6th, 2014

Article source: DMOA architecten

In this house in the suburbs of Antwerp, weathering steel lamellae are in command. Inside as well as outside they define the spaces, they mark out the boundaries where needed and open again when suited. They glow in the rusty evening sun and give a twinkling show of shadows. They embrace and protect the environment of the residents of this extraordinary house. You can feel them everywhere.

The interior design started on a floor of the building that was still a shell. Creating one long corridor for circulation made it possible to conceal the shafts, while a stretch ceiling proved the ideal solution for resolving acoustical problems.
