The entire project was conceived in an economical way to preserve materials and to optimize the ratio between the area and the construction cost ($3,280 per square foot), but not at the expense of quality. Indeed, the owner and architect did not discount architectural quality, spatial functionality, etc. Thus, for example, the choice to develop a light, wood construction for the whole house allows for:
This project comprises the inner-city renovation of a 1950s office building into a fire station. The project site is located in Sint-Jacobsmarkt,inside the Boulevards and is therefore part of the old city centre inside the 16th century city walls. The multiple historical facades which form part of the surrounding streets cape testify to this.
THE ASSIGNMENT
The construction of student housing and redevelopment of a protected interbellum period building in order to create a hostel.
THE LOCATION
The construction site is located in the heart of Ghent’s student neighborhood. The area is demarcated by rear facades and the gardens belonging to surrounding buildings. The only access to this inner area is along the street called ‘Sint Pietersnieuwstraat’. This entrance is characterized, in particular, by the office building ‘Het Licht’ (the light), erected in 1930, drawn by architects Fernand and Maxime Brunfaut. An 18th century building stands next to this light-giving city beacon and it too needs to be preserved and restored.

In this house in the suburbs of Antwerp, weathering steel lamellae are in command. Inside as well as outside they define the spaces, they mark out the boundaries where needed and open again when suited. They glow in the rusty evening sun and give a twinkling show of shadows. They embrace and protect the environment of the residents of this extraordinary house. You can feel them everywhere.
Interior materials: Cabinets in oak, dark painted, Kitchen in Corian and silestone, Flooring in dark oak, Flooring rooms children: Bolon textile flooring, Bathrooms: Mortex (Beal)
The interior design started on a floor of the building that was still a shell. Creating one long corridor for circulation made it possible to conceal the shafts, while a stretch ceiling proved the ideal solution for resolving acoustical problems.

This OYO story takes you all the way back to April, when we were notified of our prequalification to design a new campus building for Howest in Kortrijk. Together with Arch&Teco we accepted the challenge to compete against nine other well established offices. We put a lot of love into this design and are proud to present to you our second prize winning proposal.
