Care lab is a part of the university building Vives North in Bruges. The building is completed in 2009 and designed by De Vloed architects. It consists of three annexes: a relatively closed concrete plinth, a three-story building and a floating roof. Characteristic to this school building is the frequent use of exposed concrete for load bearing walls and floors.
Single-family house, with low-energy consumption and wood-frame located in Thy Le Baudouin (Florennes).
Given the sun’s course at the back of the lot and the landscape forming a slope, the project proposes a different concept of traditional housing. The entrance to the house is made by a semi-buried level in contact with the road (entrance / cloak room / cellar / car-port for one car / bicycle storage and garden) and the living areas are located on the first floor (living room / back kitchen / dog area / games for children). Upstairs, (sleeping areas / dressing rooms / bathrooms) allows access to the back of the garden by a slightly sloping footbridge. It allows the children to access directly at the field level. The two lavatories are accessible from each landing of the staircase.
A contemporary city home that fits into the surrounding area was the aim of this project. A patio home with a nod to the typological characteristics of the surrounding area is the result. Entering happens through the street, passing an open patio connected to the Molenpoortplein. Because of this we breach the ‘traditional way of living’ in the city centre. The patio constitutes the anchor point of the house and ensures that the necessary natural light reaches the entire house. Surrounding the open character of the patio are on the ground floor the entrance, a guest room with accompanying bathroom unit, a storage area and the parking space.
A new school in the city park of Zaventem. The design idea is to plant the building as modest as possible on the site to preserve the existing trees and green space. The location of the building is determined by giving solution at the least pleasant edge zone of the park. The park gets a new ‘hoek’ [angle]. The building becomes an extension of the park by a dubious play of inside/outside bounderies.
A regional house for the commune of Edeghem inside a warehouse, where kids can learn about nature and ecology.
This project is framed within a wider masterplan for the Fort V site, aiming to strengthen the current function of public park. The ‘bioclass’ is known to locals, but needs a new infrastructure. It is conceived as a new reception centre for education of nature and ecology for the region.
The artist Pascale Marthine Tayou wishes to convert a group of interconnected warehouses into a place for work, creativity and hospitality.
The warehouses are renovated minimally by means of a new floor and a new waterproofing layer on the roof, and the stripping of all interior walls, laying bare the steel structures of different times. The warehouses open up to become one continuous open plan to host exposition and work area’s.
The team led by Atelier Kempe Thill has recently won the international competition for the new Maritime Museum in Antwerp, Belgium. The museum will be located at the impressive historic dry docks (Droogdokkensite), forming an important part of the on-going redevelopment of the northern edge of the city centre. The museum will be dedicated to the maritime heritage that has always played an important role in the history of the city. In addition to classical museum spaces, the new institute will offer several large workshops to restore historic boats, offices for the harbour authority, various event facilities as well as a big outdoor exhibition area.
