Their mission is clear: »WE wins the day.« As Germany’s largest private charity in the social sector, Aktion Mensch is dedicated to ensuring the normal coexistence of people with and without disabilities in all walks of life. Inclusion is key for this non-profit association, which has been financed through a social lottery for over 50 years. And this now becomes evident in their own headquarters in Bonn. But how can the impressive diversity of its team be fostered in everyday working life without limits and restraints becoming tangible? The answer: When we translate this WE into a design concept that takes diversity as its guiding principle. Interior architecture as a strong framework for the human.
Historic buildings in front of Bonn’s main station were demolished as part of the city railway restructuring in the 1970s. The redevelopment of this area, which has only been implemented in part since, still represents a sensitive break in the city fabric between the main station and the old town; as an inner-city problem zone called “Bonner Loch”, it still shapes the first impressions of people arriving by train. After more than 45 years, the “Urban Soul” project now provides the first opportunity to activate the unused potentials of the location with an approach inspired by the spirit of the “genius loci”.

The Federal Republic of Germany chose the multinational firm Laboratory for Visionary Architecture [LAVA] as the designers for their bid to host the Secretariat of the Green Climate Fund [GCF] in Bonn. LAVA’s design for the headquarters of the GCF is ‘an ecological model project’ and demonstrates their motto: ‘green is the new black’.
Linking city to river promenade, the new Beethoven Symphony Hall rises – a beacon of light, a porous multifaceted crystalline mass, growing out of earth, floating on water. This iconic structure, its two embedded performance spaces softly visible from without, becomes a ‘performer’ in its own right after dark.
