Ilot Queyries in Bordeaux, France by MVRDV

Friday, July 7th, 2017

Article source: MVRDV

Designed to fully exploit this exceptional location, Ilot Queyries’ facades adapt to their opposite views towards the River Garonne and the historic city. The plan aims to reflect the qualities of Bordeaux World Heritage Site city centre whilst adding new qualities. Emblematic of the masterplan are facades with 45° angles which are used as a tool to generate maximum ventilation, daylight and sun. These angles have also opened the possibilities to create innovative housing. The larger building at the riverfront will have a distinct gold-splashed façade, whilst different shades of ceramic tiles, give a textured effect from top to bottom. The glass-fronted rooftop restaurant offers panoramic views of the historic city and river. At the heart of this collective dwellings is its large public courtyard with a garden of alder, birch and high grasses.

Dental Office in Bordeaux, France by BUPA Architectures

Sunday, June 25th, 2017

Article source: BUPA Architectures

Urban approach

The project is located in front of the junction of three roads including avenue d’Eysines important axis, at the heart of a urban district with a very characteristic typology of Bordeaux.

The project involves the transformation of an old restaurant into a dental clinic. This old building made of stone was set back one floor above the street level. The goal of this renovation is to revalorize the existing and fill the void by creating a built front at the street level. This project thus becomes a signal, the beginning of an island designed by roads.

Article source: Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architects

The design for the Strasbourg Palais de la Musique et des Congrès by Austrian architectural firm Dietrich | Untertrifaller and French firm Rey-Lucquet & Associés combines the two existing music halls from the 1970s and 80s with new buildings to create a harmonious ensemble with a distinctive architectural identity. The expansion and general renovation of the convention center involves the construction of a 3,000 m² multifunctional hall, a conference hall for 450 people, and a 520-seat auditorium, the expansion and conversion of two existing concert halls, plus a new rehearsal hall for the Strasbourg Philharmonic orchestra. In December 2016, the recently completed project was nominated for the European Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2017.

BOR1 – School Complex in Bordeaux, France by JOLY&LOIRET

Tuesday, December 20th, 2016

Article source: JOLY&LOIRET

One school per floor, one playground per level: outside spaces accessed directly from their relative interior spaces; 3 ‘ground’-floors. A metaphor for the world, nature, ecosystems; the sky, the forest, the earth.

The creche occupies the ‘climatic’ layer: façades reflecting the sky, clouds and the ‘protective’ tree canopy.

MECA in Bordeaux, France by Big Bjarke Ingels Group

Tuesday, July 5th, 2016

Article source: Big Bjarke Ingels Group

This project brings together three cultural institutions into one building: FRAC (the Aquitaine Regional Fund for Contemporary Art), ECLA (the Cultural Agency for Writing, Music, Film & Broadcasting), and OARA (the Artistic Office of the Aquitaine Region for performing arts). Together, they are transformed into a single institution: the Maison de l’Économie Créative et de la Culture en Aquitaine – the MÉCA. We propose a building integrated with the waterfront promenade of Bordeaux to allow public life to flow through the MÉCA.
