Club Mascara in Sofia, Bulgaria by studio MODE

Thursday, February 2nd, 2017

Article source: studio MODE

This is a story of the missing chapter of Alice in Wonderland. A story about finding out how deep the rabbit hole goes… Everyone is the actor and the spectator. DJ is the director. MODE is the composer. MASCARA is the grand scene. Club MASCARA is an emblematic spot in the history of night life in Sofia. Situated in the Underground level of the National Opera and Ballet. We were inspired by the idea of the opera, as an art – the decors, the scene, the costumes. We created a scene for the night life. We were back to the basic perception of black and white, as in the book of Alice.

VARNA CONTEMPORARY LIBRARY in Bulgaria by PLUKK / Architecture

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016

Article source: PLUKK / Architecture

The form of the library is based on the idea of the concentration of local collections of education into a single treasury, whose looks of a golden casket associates the most precious treasure of the country. The heart of the building consists in its own book archive, surrounded and protected by successive library spaces with direct daylight and freedom of movement in both the horizontal and vertical direction. The solid mass of the archive is slightly rotated in order to create qualitatively comparable surfaces throughout the building. The library operation is divided into four basic segments. An elevated parterre with a mezzanine operates with a minimum built-up areas, as you can enter it from all directions. This leads to an active link between the public space of the city and the library. Ir is followed by a segment associating four stories of the library for adults and youth, which is coupled with a reading room and a terrace continuously bordering the entire building. The last function block houses a media library and the children’s department. It has its own sheltered terrace which opens to a panoramic view of the town and the nearby sea.

Hookah Bar Nargile in Sofia, Bulgaria by KMAN Studio

Friday, April 15th, 2016

Article source: KMAN Studio

When our client contacted us to design the interior of a traditional oriental hookah bar in Sofia, we sought inspiration in the “One thousand and one nights” stories, and the intricate geometric patterns adorning classical Islamic architecture. Housed in a 200sqm rectangular area which opens to a garden in the south, we created a space that celebrates the centuries-long tradition of hookah smoking with a bold and modern twist.

The current design site has its unique building boundary. Especially, the height limit for right to sunshine to the neighbors creates the interesting form by its slope on the roof area. The boundaries are a pre-made form of architecture. It is weather friendly for the seasons of rain and snow by its natural form. To respect this condition has very much necessitated into our design process.

Observation house in Bulgaria by I/O architects

Friday, November 6th, 2015

Article source: I/O architects

The house is located on a hill in the highest corner of a village amid an agricultural area in Northeast Bulgaria.

The site of the project is distinguished both by its panoramic views and distant visibility. In order to strengthen them, a part of the program is located in the seemingly blind bastion-like volume and the living area is elevated high on it. This brings view completion up to 360 degree and privacy in the fully opened space above. The pitched roof connects geometrically the upper volume with the base and adds complexity in the interior space while the oversized eaves connect it to the little meadow around and exaggerate the hovering effect of the slim metal structure. The proportion and the materiality of the solid base give it the appearance of an infrastructural object that define the edge of the village and conceal the ambitious program of the house. The only perforation leads to the cave like space of the entrance hall / garage. The materiality of the interior spaces is dominated by local species wood cladding, which balances the roughness of the entire structure and its surroundings.
