The house was built at the foot of a hill and —to make the most of the lot—concrete piling was done to have the necessary structure to meet the program required by the clients. It is a two-storey house with a flat roof and elevator that also has an attractive hill where herbal and fruit gardening was developed. It’s like a boat on the sky by the way it stands out from the piles and integrates into its environment.
Comprised of perpendicular bars atop a hill overlooking the village of Healdsburg, this home offers both ample social space ideal for entertaining and the privacy of a rural retreat.
The taller section runs along the ridge of the hill and houses the home’s great room under lofty ceilings and a simple shed overhanging roof, filled with light and views let in through tall glass walls. Four oversized glass panels open dramatically on each side, transforming the space into an outdoor pavilion whose flush concrete floors extend into a poolside patio to the north and into a terrace featuring a fire pit to the south to offer comfortable outdoor areas for both hot and cool weather. With these doors drawn up, the site offers one sweeping, continuous view from the pool, through the great room, and down into the distant village below.

OZU East Kitchen, located in the Atwater Village neighborhood of Los Angeles, is the prototype and initial brand identity for a suite of restaurants focusing on Japanese and Korean influenced cuisine served in a fast-casual environment. Inspired by the technical craftsmanship and narrative clarity of the art of legendary Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, the restaurant design is a study in the potential of a minimal yet visually and materially rich palette to generate an immersive and socially dynamic environment.
The site is characterized by its remote feeling and mature trees; this despite being surrounded by dense urban development. It is an unusual paradox to have such a natural setting that occurs in the middle of Los Angeles – a city known for its endless sprawl and crawling traffic.
Located at Mugu Point California, fifty miles away from Los Angeles where Malka Architecture just opened its new studio, the Mugu House is nested on Malibu’s Hills porosities.
The project benefits from the existing topography of the actual site ; the result is a zero impact on the surrounding nature, an ecological project in immersion with the rock, its vegetation and its thermal variations.
The main objective of this project was to create a minimalist design, white box for a contemporary home located in Lake Tahoe on the Truckee River outside of Squaw Valley, California. The design needed to be clean with no frills and render a solution that is bright and explores both positive and negative spaces.
Gensler’s design for San Francisco International Airport’s renovated Terminal 3 Boarding Area E (T3BAE) will showcase innovative design, interactive technology and a healthy environment carefully tuned to offer travelers a place where they will enjoy spending time. The 65,000-square-foot renovation features progressive sustainability measures that promote wellbeing, and is targeting LEED-Gold certification. A raised “Flight Deck” interactive experience will serve as an exciting physical point of entry to Boarding Area E, which will include 10 gates serving United Airlines. The project was built in a design-build partnership between Hensel Phelps and Gensler for San Francisco International Airport.

On a gritty stretch of Venice Boulevard in Los Angeles, the PSPMLA office sits on a previously vacant 2,500 sf infill commercial parcel. Dubbed the “Light Box” for its simple geometry slotted in acknowledgement of the natural solar conditions, the 2,200 sf office for a boutique property management firm discretely slips into the streetscape of tightly packed auto body shops, neon sign fabricators, digital printers, and various light commercial businesses. The design expands upon the urban texture of the street, while also carving out a bright, naturally illuminated respite for the office staff and their clientele.

We received a commission from a married couple to design a house to be built on a small plot (with an 8-meter frontage and a depth of 30 meters) inserted within a dense and difficult context. The couple, whose children had already left home, asked us for a simple house, obstruction-free and with a strongly contemporary feel.
Klopf Architecture, Outer Space Landscape Architects, Sezen & Moon Structural Engineer and Flegels Construction updated a classic Eichler open, indoor-outdoor home.
Everyone loved the classic, original bones of this house, but it was in need of a major facelift both inside and out. The owners also wanted to remove the barriers between the kitchen and great room, and increase the size of the master bathroom as well as make other layout changes. No addition to the house was contemplated.
