This single-family residence that sits atop an existing flat pad features a façade held in place by a high-performance two-sided architectural panel tape. The owner of the home was an executive of 3M, which is where this tape was developed and to our knowledge is the first application for a residential home.
Bandai Namco Entertainment America is a video game publisher for consoles, mobile devices, and computers. The company publishes some of the most beloved video games of our time including Pac-Man, Dragon Ball, Tekken, Digimon and Dark Souls to name a few. The company hired Blitz to design their 41,475 SF office space in Santa Clara, California. The goal: to reflect the energetic and playful nature of their company while creating dynamic meeting spaces that would accommodate their various creative teams.
The recently renovated Hitch Student Residences, located on the northwest edge of campus, is a complex of four three-story residential buildings organized around a series of courtyards and a new commons building with shared amenities and meeting spaces. The renovation project was conceived to address accessibility and life-safety deficiencies, including seismic strengthening of the existing structures and inclusion of fire protection systems. The project also provided the opportunity to update the exterior image and energy performance of the buildings by providing a new “skin” as well as updating the interior spaces with new finishes. The existing outdated commons building was replaced with a new building that provides support functions for the Hitch community including study areas, offices, laundry facilities, vending, and a multipurpose space that includes a display kitchen.
CCS Architecture has partnered again with owners Umberto Gibin and Staffan Terje to design their third restaurant. Volta is located in a corner space on Mission Street at the Westfield San Francisco Centre within the city’s Yerba Buena Cultural district. While their current restaurants Perbacco and Barbacco are both Italian, Volta is a departure that incorporates influences from France, as well as Staffan’s native country of Sweden, both in the cuisine and the design.

Cloverdale749 is located around the block from the historically significant Miracle Mile hub comprising the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and many noteworthy cultural destinations. Adhering to a strategy to maximize land use and capitalize on zoning, the building’s 10,500 square feet push against floor area and density limitations determined by the lot’s size and location. In essence, this project is a volume that cannot expand further.

The project houses 150 low income, very low income and formerly homeless families and individuals, currently including 261 children. As with other affordable housing in San Francisco, the tenants were selected by lottery from a long list of qualified applicants. Given the acute housing needs most of these people have experienced, particularly the homeless, the project sponsors, city officials, funders, and architects have endeavored to provide for a spectrum of user needs. Moreover, the intention has been to create an environment to forge bonds of community and companionship within the project, to make it a welcome, integral part of the neighborhood, and, by the prominence of the site and the excellence of its architecture, to serve as a symbol of the city’s robust efforts to address the ever-growing need for affordable and supportive housing.
The project develops the concept of a small shop in the heart of the old town of Lodi, where the owners had the need to unite the sale of two types of products completely at odds: craft beers and confetti with bombioniere. The idea was to separate the two types of products not in the physical sense but perceptive, delineating spaces chromatically (dark gray on one side and white on the other) uniting the shop with some textural elements of furniture made with the same essence wooden. The result maintains a minimal line on one side and the other functional, making the homogeneous spatial experience but at the same time personalized depending on whether you are in one or another space.

The site is where the elevated 101 Freeway connects to the surface streets at Market and becomes Octavia Boulevard – the entrance to north/west sector of San Francisco. The First Baptist Church with its classical façade and strong cornice is one pylon of this entrance. Mirroring this mass, on the other side of Octavia Boulevard, 8 Octavia completes the gateway. This entry is seen as an opportunity to present our new city, one that folds tradition and innovation.
DES A+E designed the High Garden to transform what would ordinarily be an underutilized parking deck into a green oasis. Instead of 250 parking spots, it has two-acres of greenspace. The park is one of the central amenities to the Moffett Place campus, which was recently leased to Google in its entirety. The campus is the 2nd largest office project under construction in Silicon Valley.
Martial Cottle Park in San Jose, California recently welcomed three new facilities expected to achieve LEED Silver certifications. These additions, built with Kebony’s modified softwoods, will complement the 287-acre landscape and include a 4,000 square foot Visitor Center that neighbors the park’s historic orchards, a 3,600 square foot Staff and Maintenance Building with storage and a 300 square foot entry kiosk.
