The Welch Road Translational Research Campus reflects the new vision for the Stanford University School of Medicine to transform the Welch Road properties from a parcel-zoned, suburban land-use to a more integrated, pedestrian-focused campus. The campus is composed of two buildings: The Jill and John Freidenrich Translational Research Center (pictured here) and the CJ Huang Asian Liver Center and Academic Medical Office Building.
A home improvement marketplace technology company, this open and collaborative work environment was designed with a balance of open office work benches, and spaces for meetings, meditation, play and private phone calls. A gated area with lockers for personal storage encourages bicycle commuting and use of the Bay Trail along the edge of the San Francisco Bay. Techshed’s brand is expressed with an impactful punch of brand color and in the form of the plywood sheds that house meeting and meditation rooms. An open Café with a robust audio visual system doubles as an all hands meeting and presentation space.
Interior Architecture Preserves Original 1940s Warehouse in Santa Monica’s Former Industrial Corridor Gwynne Pugh Urban Studio with Andy Waisler has recently completed an adaptive reuse of a 1940s bowstring truss and brick warehouse in Santa Monica. The 17,000 square foot building was artistically designed for a well-known animation studio that has recently achieved significant commercial success. Urban Studio designed an interior renovation that is warm, forthright and efficient, while also elegant and inspiring.

This horse ranch in Brentwood, California is a livable romantic blend of contemporary and Mediterranean architectural sensibilities. The house was originally created for two artists, husband and wife; one an architect turned director, another, a writer and sommelier. Both were very passionate about every detail that had gone into the creation of all their living spaces; a restoration in Italy and a loft in New York City.
The project is located in Los Angeles California, USA, The property is found at street level in a commercial area, on a street where there are mostly shops with a lot of traffic of cars and pedestrian. The main idea was to introduce some of that public space turning into the store in an extension of the street.
The Bechtel Conference Center is designed to communicate the values of The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), a San-Francisco-based think-tank dedicated to public policy decision-making through nonpartisan research and dialogue. The Center, located on the ground floor of PPIC’s downtown San Francisco office building, reflects the organization’s ideals of openness and cooperative communication.
Software used: For the wood fin geometry in the conference center, used Rhino at the concept phase to quickly study different forms. Then used AutoCAD to develop the design and create profile for each one of the 297 pieces for production.
Los Angeles based United Oil Company began incorporating modern architecture and unique interior design elements into their Southern California service stations in the early 80’s, shifting the way consumers experience pumping gas. Since then, the Company has redefined the service station Industry, creating flagship designs, using top-line materials such as hand cut slate, molded copper, and eclectic themes – all influences driven by the architectural vision of United Oil Co. vice president, Jeff Appel. The privately owned, family-run business recently celebrated 50 years in business, and are known for creating incredibly clean, vibrant, and artistic gas stations throughout Southern California – now operating 124 stations to date.
Situated in the Antelope Valley, along the Western edge of the Mojave Desert, the Mojave Rivers Ranger Station is designed for administrative and fire personnel from the USDA Forest Service Mojave Rivers Ranger District. Both client and architect aspired to achieve a building appropriate to its context and to the function of the agency. In keeping with the Forest Service’s principles, the ranger station is designed to convey the agency’s roots as an institution with “an ethic of conservation and stewardship, a close tie to the land, and an orientation of service to current and future generations.” The result is a facility whose form and aesthetic is largely shaped by its desert site and climate.
This two story, 8000 s.f. residence is located at the intersection of two channels within the Oxnard Marina. Being a vacation home, and given the maritime location, the house has a strong Asian theme, and conceptually is inspired by a south East Asian village, with most of the rooms having a separate roof structure, as a cluster of pavilions.
The curvilinear separation between kitchen and public spaces is taken from the shape of the client’s boat docked just outside.
Founded in 1972, the Isla Vista Food Cooperative is the only natural and organic foods consumer cooperative in Santa Barbara County. Though a mainstay in the community, the Co-op was often ignored by pedestrians, not realizing what lay behind its inconspicuous storefront.
