UNStudio and EE&K a Perkins Eastman company, and Jacobs Engineering have submitted a proposal for a scope of work to develop a Master Plan of Los Angeles Union Station.
Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, along with Jonathan Cohn of EE&K, presented their ‘Vision Board’ – a conceptual rendering in the year 2050, showing Los Angeles Union Station as a multi-modal transit hub with a mix of uses, new development and outdoor spaces. The intent of the Vision Board was to explore visionary possibilities for Union Station and surrounding areas. The vision submitted does not portray the final design issues that will be examined in the Master Plan, however it does show a hint of the possibilities for the city and the regional transit hub of the future.

Future Cities Lab’s HYDRAMAX Port Machines project proposes a radical rethinking of San Francisco’s urban waterfront post sea-level rise. The proposal renders the existing hard edges of the waterfront as new “soft systems” that would include aquatic parks, community gardens, wildlife refuges and aquaponic farms. A synthetic architecture is introduced that blurs the distinction between building, landscape, infrastructure and machine. Using thousands of sensors and motorized components, the massive urban scale robotic structure harvests rainwater and fog, while modulating air flow, solar exposure and intelligent building systems.

While national property markets still struggle to recover, the slowdown in home-buying is bolstering demand for apartments—and creating more work for Irvine-based MVE & Partners, one of the nation’s premier residential and mixed-use architecture firms.
“Domestic real estate remains iffy, but there are pockets of recovery, including multi-family,” said Carl McLarand, AIA, chairman of MVE & Partners. “Of course, we have been designing apartments and community developments for nearly 40 years, so this is playing to one of our strengths.”
An existing study/bedroom of a 1950’s modern house is transformed into a private working library for two. Conceptually, two distinct surfaces run along or perpendicular to the two opposing wall while creating spatial volume by multiple cuts and folds. These cuts and folds increase possible practical space through their operations, creating visual hierarchy and continuity. Color is used to give clues to the surface folding assembly, to trace the method of fabrication, and to project possible surface operation.

The new Sunset Triangle Plaza is set to open under the auspices of Streets for People (S4P), an initiative of the City of Los Angeles Planning Commission and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Noted design firm Rios Clementi Hale Studios contributed its time and talents to transform an underutilized public right of way into a safe, pleasant, and vibrant public space for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Located at Griffith Park and Sunset Boulevards in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, Sunset Triangle Plaza opens on Sunday, March 4, 2012, at 11AM, for a community celebration.

Situated in one of the ranges of the Berkeley Hills, this project is located in a 1950s modern house, designed to embrace a spectacular view on one side while wrapping around an inner courtyard garden pushed against an upper stone retaining wall. This interior courtyard is the subject of design consideration for an installation driven by the desire to define the garden space with a visual destination from the interior rooms.

Michael W. Folonis Architects Designs LEED Gold Cancer Clinic
Michael W. Folonis Architects (MWFA) has won a 2011 National Healthcare Design Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH), in the Unbuilt category, for the design of the UCLA Outpatient Surgery and Oncology Center in Santa Monica, CA.
With the UCLA Outpatient Surgery and Oncology Center—opening in Fall 2011—MWFA created a 50,000-square-foot hybrid facility to house community outpatient surgery and oncology treatment, as well as academic and medical office facilities for UCLA medical students and faculty. The new building, developed by Randall Miller, PE, of Nautilus Group, is slated for LEED Gold certification.

SITE SPECIFICITY
These two lots on Bretano way are steeply sloped and have a north-western orientation. The contours form a concaved amphitheater-like shape focusing on the existing pool and the house’s back patio. The area is dense with foliage but there are pockets of clear space that create sheltered little moments as you walk upon them. Both large public areas and these isolated spaces exist and the differences in scale offer a variety of experiences. There is an overall sense of protection and inward focus while on the site. The downward momentum of the land combined with the expansive canopies of the oak trees makes the space feel immediate, protected and calm. This is a wonderful contrast to the other very dynamic systems that are presented in this booklet and this contrast may be fruitful as we begin to establish common design intent.
McCarthy-Built Miramar College Police Substation Receives USGBC LEED Platinum Certification
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded LEED® Platinum Certification of the new 5,108-square-foot police substation at San Diego Miramar College, located at 10440 Black Mountain Road in the Mira Mesa/Scripps Ranch area of San Diego.
McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (www.mccarthy.com), one of the nation’s leading education and parking builders, constructedthe new police substation, together with the adjacent 270,000-square-foot, 828-space parking structure.Construction of the combined $17.9 million project was completed in late November on behalf of the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD). It is the first higher education facility in San Diego County to achieve LEED Platinum Certification, the highest rating possible.
Working collaboratively with the District and the Campus Police Department was paramount to achieving this goal, stated McCarthy Project Director Bob Betz.
The Paul Davis Architects-led transformation of an iconic, modernist waterfront structure in Newport Beach, CA, has wowed high-fashion shoppers and won a 2011 Preservation Design Award for Rehabilitation from the California Preservation Foundation (CPF).
“A’maree’s was brought back in marvelous style,” noted the CPF Preservation Design Awards jury. “This is a beautiful building that uplifts the spirit.”
