Colorado Court in Santa Monica, California by Brooks + Scarpa Architects

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Article source: Brooks + Scarpa Architects

Colorado Court
is one of the first buildings of its type in the United States that is 100% energy independent. Colorado Court distinguishes itself from most conventionally developed projects in that it incorporates energy efficient measures that exceed standard practice, optimize building performance, and ensure reduced energy use during all phases of construction and occupancy. The planning and design of Colorado Court emerged from close consideration and employment of passive solar design strategies. These strategies include: locating and orienting the building to control solar cooling loads; shaping and orienting the building for exposure to prevailing winds; shaping the building to induce buoyancy for natural ventilation; designing windows to maximize day lighting; shading south facing windows and minimizing west-facing glazing; designing windows to maximize natural ventilation; shaping and planning the interior to enhance daylight and natural air flow distribution.

Habitat 15 in Hollywood, California by Predock Frane Architects (designed using AutoCAD and Rhino)

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Article source: Predock Frane Architects

DESIGN INTENT: Working within the context of a for-profit MUR creates a particular set of parameters; programmatic, physical, and client/cost informed. Our solution is two 4-story buildings placed parallel to the street. Between them is a courtyard, reached via a tunnel through the first building, accommodating shared public space and circulation. The simple cubic shape of the buildings allowed for greater project resources to be deployed to the sectional relations within the units. The separation into two buildings allows half of the unit’s access to light on three sides.

Claremont Residence in Los Angeles, California by Altius Architecture (designed using ArchiCAD)

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

Article source: Altius Architecture

This home is sited on an amazing property that offered both the intimacy of a classic English landscape as well as expansive panoramic views over rolling, rural fields towards Lake Ontario. The goal of the design was to embrace the immediate intimacy of the site while revealing, through the architecture, the extensive views offered from various vantage points within the home. The exposed heavy timber Douglas Fir structure hugs the landscape allowing large expanses of glass to bring the surroundings inside while providing dramatic moments when the endless view exposes itself.
