Gehry Residence in Santa Monica, California by Gehry Partners LLP

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Article source: Gehry Partners LLP

The Gehry Residence in Santa Monica, Calif., has been selected for the 2012 AIA Twenty-five Year Award. A seemingly adhoc collection of raw, workmanlike materials wrapped around an unassuming two-story clapboard bungalow, Frank Gehry’s, FAIA, home for his wife, Berta, and two sons found a literal, but unexpected, answer to the question of neighborhood context, and used it to forever re-shape the formal and material boundaries of architecture.

Calistoga Residence in California by Strening Architects (designed using SketchUp and Revit)

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Article source: Daniel J. Strening

This project was a residence for a couple from the Washington D.C. area. The original house was a poorly conceived series of stucco boxes with no relationship to the outdoor spaces, or the distant vistas. These qualities were some of the more spectacular aspects of the 25 acre site.

Article source: WA design

Just north of San Francisco is the largely suburban and rural County of Marin. The bay side has been developed with upscale suburbs, but with zoning rules the west side, which borders the Pacific Ocean, has remained an agricultural and rural preserve. The Marin coastline is one of green rolling hills that slope down to the rugged palisades that meet the Pacific.

Sapphire Residential Gallery in Los Angeles, California by XTEN Architecture (designed with Rhino and AutoCAD)

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Article source: XTEN Architecture

The Sapphire Gallery is a residential addition designed to display a private collection of contemporary art while also providing for a home office with views to the surrounding hills. The owners’ collection includes work by the artists Gregory Crewdson, Uta Barth, Tomoroy Dodge and the video artist Jennifer Steinkamp, and they wanted a new building that would be more than just a container for their art collection. The new gallery extension is multivalent, with different spaces for presenting artworks, while also opening to hillside views, incorporating a home office, and creating a compelling new focal point for the approach and entry to the property.
