Located in a nature preserve in the Santa Lucia Mountains, the site of oak forests and steep meadows strongly impacted and inspired Feldman Architecture’s design for House Ocho. In order to reduce the impact of the home’s massing and to preserve site lines, the building settles into the ground and overhanging roofs are planted with tall native grasses. The house is also divided up into a series of pavilions to lessen its overall mass.
The Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMH) opens its doors this fall as the permanent home and display of a collection of artifacts from a ghastly era one-half century passed. Located within a public park at the site of an existing Holocaust memorial, the architecture of the L.A. Museum of the Holocaust straddles the line between autonomous sculpture and a civic destination mindful of the institution and public audience it serves. Museums must function in a precise manner to simultaneously deliver a message through potent content presentation while offering a spatial experience which affords visitors a contemplative asylum. Additionally, this museum uses architecture to enhance the ambient foundation for visitors to receive the intended messages being delivered through each display. Ultimately, the overall design of the building and interior displays transforms each visitor’s encounter with the building and surrounding park into a memorable event capable of instilling a lasting impression of the genocide which occurred and the tolerance needed to move forward compassionately.

The original Alvarado home was a small Victorian, built in the late 19th century. It presented limitations typical of the homes of the era: a very compartmentalized floor plan; dark internal rooms; a small, utilitarian kitchen; and little connection to the outdoors. Our concept was to transform the existing Victorian house to better suit the needs of a modern family, with particular emphasis on changing the rear of the house. One of the challenges was to optimize light, while preserving privacy in a dense urban setting.
The stairway is curved and sheathed in recycled, corrugated metal with a vertical slit window facing east to distribute morning light evenly across the walls of the 18’ high stairwell that also doubles as a display gallery for the photography studio.
The renovation of this 1908 craftsman’s house and garage was completed in three phases over the course of 7-years. Interiors were opened up, basements were excavated to create additional living stories and modern details were introduced throughout the property, resulting in a final design that reveals multiple layers of time and occupancy. The small building footprints (600sf house / 500sf garage) are optimized for function and light while their new spatial connection across the courtyard makes the full site available for the daily use of the family.
This major renovation to a single-family home in Los Angeles on a rather dramatic site aims to provide multiple direct connections to the outdoors maximizing exposure to the newly landscaped rear yard that abuts a small creek. An upper, exterior deck extends out from the living room placing you among the trees and bamboo, a soft green buffer that effectively maintains a veil of privacy. The lower deck connects the master bedroom and the two children’s bedrooms with casual seating areas and a jacuzzi tub.
