This new house is sited on a north-facing ridge overlooking the Dry Creek Valley. The site and climate required an architecture that tempers the seasonally intense sun and wind while still engaging the spectacular landscape and views.
Elementary School for Panorama City Makes Big Use of Small Site; MVE Institutional’s Design Emphasizes Efficiency, Sustainability and Community.
Almost 1,000 students are enjoying naturally lit classrooms, fresh-air ventilation and outdoor teaching spaces at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Valley Region Elementary School #6 in Panorama City, designed by Irvine-based MVE Institutional (MVEI). The school houses 38 teaching stations in a state-of-the-art, 70,360-square-foot facility on an infill parcel of only 4.31 acres in this city located northwest of downtown Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley.

Lately, for various reasons, there has been constant instability and uncertainty that has impeded generating a sporting culture in San Diego where support for the home team is part of the urban and social fabric of the city. The idea of the San Diego Chargers leaving to another location (most possibly LA) created a somber feeling amongst their fans. With that thought, DBRDS wanted to explore an architectural solution for a new stadium downtown that would capture the imagination of the City, the fans & the Chargers to be inspired to want to stay & forever belong in San Diego… to become an iconic fabric of people’s in this great City.
In designing a private residence, our primary concern is to answer the specific needs of the client while rethinking the local domestic typology. Thus, we started the project by mapping the neighboring houses, and also by carefully delving into the client’s daily life and routines.
Scientists from around the world gather to help advance the study of the oceans, earth, and marine life sciences at this oceanfront conference center located at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. The building is located atop an ocean bluff, with strong winds, western sun, and an existing grove of palms providing the natural context. Responding to these forces without impacting their natural beauty was a driving goal in the design of the project. In addition, the uniquely informal character of the Scripps community, with its clear appreciation of the natural environment and outdoors, became an influential factor in the design. The LEED certified project includes a flexible auditorium space, four oceanfront meeting rooms of varying sizes, a student lounge, and restaurant. The program is broken into several buildings connected by a trellised walkway creating a porous structure that preserves ocean views and breezes for the rest of the campus.

Price, speed and quality are always the key elements to a design project. Whether it be a remodel or a ground up project, we are always striving for the perfect equilibrium. Here, we started with an existing ranch style house in the Encino Hills and within 6 months we completed design, permitting and construction. The end result is what feels like a brand new house, all while staying within our client’s budget.

The restoration and preservation of the Ford Assembly Building on the San Francisco Bay waterfront, saved an historic architectural icon from the wrecking ball, and converted a long-vacant auto plant into a current-day model of urban revitalization and sustainability. The 525,000 square foot building had been designed by Albert Kahn for Henry Ford, and constructed in 1931. Following the facility’s initial car factory function, the Ford Building had many incarnations, including the famous World War II tank factory “manned” by Rosie-the-Riveters. In 1989, the Loma Prieta Earthquake’s devastation of the structure rendered it dangerous and unusable. Finding a way to revive the magnificent but crumbling 500,000 square foot industrial hulk was challenging; multiple attempts had failed to create a financially viable way to adaptively reuse the building, while adhering to the preservation standards of the National Park Service and the State of California Historic Preservation Office’s (SHPO). Fortunately the most recent attempt took, as the current owner, who acquired the property in 2004, and his architect found the successful path to rejuvenation of the building substantially completed in 2009.
Program: The goal was to create an efficient, yet pleasant, space for those employed in the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Elections Operations Center. More-efficient storage space was also needed to house more than 1,200 pallets containing voting material and 5,000 new ballot reading and voter accessibility devices. Space was also allocated for the tax, birth, marriage, property, and death records for the County of Los Angeles, which are all stored here.
