The site’s location is on the outer strip of the city’s intra muros area of Cluj, an area best described as an architectural mélange of small historical houses with gardens and new and more expansive hotel and educational complexes. The new medical center occupies a small corner plot, between two streets with different hierarchies, and is replacing an existing ground floor house. At its eastern limit, hidden behind the gardens and houses, waves the course of the Water Mill’s Canal, designed since the 16th century to supply the water mills in the city. Unfortunately, on our plot it was covered to facilitate the extension of the annexes of the initially existing house, thus becoming invisible to passers-by on the secondary street.

The Office Cluj, an office building ensemble recently finalized, has begun as an urban regeneration project for the brownfield plot left by the old textile industry, in the vicinity of Cluj-Napoca’s historic centre. As in most communist cities, this area became part of the industrial framework of Cluj-Napoca, which even now includes some leftover industries and factories. To the north of the site there still exists an old water channel, a small ramification of the Someș river while to the south there is the main boulevard and the main connection to the historic city centre, to the west.

At the junction of two streets and two neighborhoods, one of houses between and after the war, and the other of houses of the 60s, a family of lawyers wished for an office of their own. A new building was meant to rise instead of a small and old family house that would have kept all memories only by its simple existence. However, beyond the intimate memory, the young lawyers have expressed their desire to build a landmark in the neighborhood, at a crossroads. The theme of the project required from us a contemporary expression, solid and transparent at the same time, a grading of spaces and a partition based on their team’s capability. We have worked with samples, as a tailor would do, so as to fit perfectly for those whom we outline the spaces for. The project is a scale exercise. The town planning regulations for a small lot, for a house in our case, made us to carefully analyze all joint formulas for surfaces which put on a simple, indivisible volume. The light withdrawals, sizes and positions of the holes, beyond the connections with interior spaces, aimed to match so as to be able to control the problem of scaling. In the vicinity a block of flats twice as high, and beyond it one three time taller and bigger, made us try transitions and mediations using all means available. The existing mature vegetation, giving up fences and amplifying the public space, combining materials and textures, represents the repertory of elements in fitting into that background. Basically an adequate architecture must find the proper balance from which the customer’s aspirations for landmarks are not to be missing.

When the client demanded three rectangular residential towers on a site with irregular contour, surrounded by a winding stream that derives from the Somes river and by clusters of poplar trees that surround the nearby sports park, we took the responsibility to come up with a different approach: a building that integrates the three separate units in one unitary volume with a layout that undulates on the site so that it makes the most of the natural light and views. It also provides a sheltered space and a private, quiet area, in the resulting concave space. This space is an artificial landscape, a green leisure and relaxation area that is shaped as a green roof for the underground parking.
Cluj – Napoca is a city of young people with 25% of its population studying in universities. Student life means also sports and the tradition is consistent. The new Multifunctional Sports Hall is the newest piece of public infrastructure for training, championships and cultural events, in a building conceived to be part of an ensemble together with Cluj Arena, the soccer and athletics stadium also designed by Dico and Tiganas and opened in 2011. Both objectives have generated new public spaces relating the Central Garden of the City with the river Some banks promenades, towards a Sports park and another public garden in a sequence of public spaces of almost 2 kilometers. The envelope of the building is a simple box including another box which contains the main hall, of 7.000 seats and up to 10.000 people for concerts. The facade is an assemblage of layers reflecting and transmitting the light into the foyers inside. The outer mask is mesh of parametrically distorted rectangles inspired by the nets used in several ball sports. The perforated steel plates are forming 3D pyramids reflecting the sky and the sun at every time in different angles and colored effects. The building has a permanent dialogue with the people from the street through the challenge to read the geometry of the facades, being the same time introverted. Inside the public will be guided by 4 thematic colors corresponding with the cardinals. The main hall is a stage and a backstage in the same time, bringing together the public and the performers in a black box with all equipments apparent but camouflaged. From shinning white with golden accents to dark grey and black ambiance, from outside to inside and backwards, architecture is built by light and colors.
This project has begun as a dream of a young and active family. We tried our best to provide a solution for a project that wanted to be more than a house, a home that offers it’s owners the capacity to disconnect from the busy lifestyle of a big city. Situated in close vicinity of the city Cluj-Napoca, the house uses common architectural elements that intersect with clear accents of modernity.
