House JC in Coimbra, Portugal by Mário Alves architeture

Monday, April 10th, 2023

Article source: Mário Alves architeture

Inserted in a subdivision located in Quinta da Portela, Coimbra, the land is situated in the middle of the hill. Developing a house in this location becomes a challenge due to the natural profile that the land develops.

As such, the project idea is not to land a volume that becomes a dwelling, but to design a volume that conveys the idea that it was carved in the “site” (thus creating the feeling of union with the place) at the same time as it provokes the sensation that it is the volume that holds the hill itself.

JAC House in Coimbra, Portugal by Visioarq Arquitectos

Monday, January 9th, 2023

Article source: Visioarq Arquitectos

The rehabilitation of this villa calls for various dimensions of dreams, both in the enjoyment of the interior and in the contemplation of the panoramic horizon.

The contemporary language and materials, especially the volumes of white lacquered plates and large glass spans, clearly marked the enlargement, differentiated from the original house.

Hotel in Coimbra, Portugal by depA Architects

Friday, September 20th, 2019

Article source: depA Architects

The three pre-existing buildings around a mediterranean courtyard are located Coimbra, in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Protection Zone.

In such delicate surroundings, the intervention seeks  a sensible design balanced between the need for technical adaptations to contemporary building demands, the legal requirements for a contemporary hotel and the huge care that an intervention of this type requires. In other words, the adaption to the new program and the consequent deep intervention by all means paid deep respect for the historical relevance of the buildings and its great architectural and constructive values.

Article source: luisa bebiano | architect + Atelier do Corvo

The building of Coimbra's Old Ceramics is located on the protection limit of the classification of the Rua da Sofia and Alta in the city of Coimbra (Portugal), included in the classified list of World Cultural Heritage sites of Unesco.

Located in the lower part of the city, in a medieval yard that has mutated over time, the site is in an old alluvium zone, an area affected by regular floods. The surrounding territory was, until the mid-XX century, due to the geological and moisture characteristics, suitable for the manufacture of clay, the raw material of handmade ceramics.

Headquarters and Logistic Centre of the Plural Pharmacy Cooperative in Coimbra, Portugal by ORANGE arquitectura

Monday, January 28th, 2019

Article source: ORANGE arquitectura

The former Topázio’s Factory site results from the relocation of the previous Emídio Navarro Avenue unit, in the Coimbra city center, to Pedrulha’s Industrial Area in the late 1950’s.

The strong presence of this building in the former National Road 1, currently known as Rua Manuel Madeira, can be seen, mainly, on its elevation extended along the way, with a modern language where the horizontality and the repetitive rhythm, given by the openings and friezes, are outstanding. On the other hand, the vertical gestures of the tower used to protect the Silos, attached to the transparent Manufacturing Room, and of the limestone wall where the institutional masts are anchored, appear in clear contrast on both east and west ends of the elevation, respectively.

Article source: João Branco e Paula del Rio, Arquitectos

The “Redondo” is the last of a row of four buildings built at the beginning of the 20th century in the center of Coimbra. Its cylindrical shape responds to the oblique cross between two streets, and gives the building a certain singularity and its name. The original organization in two independent houses: an apartment on the ground floor and a house with two floors and garret on the upper level, was maintained.

3 Houses 3 Sisters in Coimbra, Portugal by BICA Arquitectos

Tuesday, December 20th, 2016

Article source: BICA Arquitectos

In a small village near the city of Coimbra, 3 sisters inherit and share a land. They wanted to build a house that would join them for the second time in their lives, because the family houses they own are nowadays too large.

Located at the village’s entrance, this field is composed by two streets, a square and a small house. The implementation of the 3 houses elects as the main facade the south elevation, that adjoins the street and turns too the square at east.
