In Clapton, beside the River Lea, stands a striking art deco building bearing the name ‘Dehavilland’ in vertical red lettering. In the 1940s, this was a ‘shadow factory’, producing aircraft components for use in the war effort, including parts for the Mosquito – the ‘wooden wonder’ that dominated the skies in World War II.
Today, as a superb example of the modernist architecture of the legendary engineer Sir Owen Williams, the 1930s building has become a highly sought-after London living space, its former warehouse interior transformed into a series of open, loft-style studio apartments by the awardwinning developer Hollybrook.
Located in London’s Fitzrovia – where Riding House Street opens to Well Street – sits The Interlock, a new built five-storey mixed-use development by Bureau de Change and the first built project by developer HGG London, a company established to commission innovative architecture.
Riding House Street hosts an extraordinary breadth of architectural styles. From John Nash’s All Souls church at its most easterly point, the street skips haphazardly from 19th Century terraces to post war commercial buildings; concrete slab structures and 20 th Century apartment blocks. The street’s piecemeal aesthetic is unified by the use of brickwork which serves as the façade material of choice, at times so abundant that it forms the road surface.
Award-winning cake designer Peggy Porschen has just launched a new flagship Parlour at 219 King’s Road in London’s Chelsea, with a deliciously photogenic interior by Kinnersley Kent Design.

Imagine a re-designed floating former detention platform, iconic industrial design, unique waterfront location and a social business model – Good Hotel London, designed by Remko Verhaagen and Sikko Valk, introduces premium hospitality with a cause to the London hotel-scene.

Winchester based architects, AR Design Studio, have submitted plans for a new build ‘Paragragh 79’ (formally Paragraph 55) floating house in rural Hampshire. Entitled The Water Lily House, the house floats atop an existing disused reservoir that once served the surrounding fields. The design is derived from the initial concept of a floating lily pad, the proposal appears to delicately float upon the water.
Considering the lack of biodiversity on the reservoir, the design team saw this as an opportunity for the lake to become an asset to the site by improving the quality of the existing reservoir and the relationship between land and water.
Biodiversity not only informs the surrounding context, but also the initial concept, leaning heavily on a symbiotic relationship between the building and site. This has been distilled within the design process, and from this the form of the water lily emerged, the plant itself playing an important role in enhancing the ecosystems of pond life.
MCW Architects have completed the new £45m Learning Hub as the core of the learning experience on the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus.
The opportunity of a new campus was the enabler that allowed the University to think radically and innovatively about space – its use, arrangement, flexibility, efficiency, quantum – and to put the learner at the heart of the design.
Seven years ago the University set out to move from their existing twin campus, edge of town situation onto one single 24-ha brownfield river edge site, driving urban regeneration and bringing a major economic, social and cultural boost to the town centre. MCW Architects have been involved from the very outset, as overall Masterplanners as well as designing four of the new campus buildings and two new river bridges.
A new £15m GW Annenberg Performing Arts Centre has opened at Wellington College in Berkshire.
The main 1,400 capacity auditorium’s circular shape is inspired by historic Greek amphitheatres, creating a building with no angles: a form that sits within its forest setting. Designed with high quality acoustics and efficient circulation in mind, the Performance Arts Centre is the venue for students to showcase their creative talents in a formal setting.
British Fashion designer Bella Freud has collaborated with Maria Speake – co-founder of design and salvage mecca Retrouvius – to apply her cool-girl chic to Helios 710, a three bedroom penthouse in The Helios, a circular Grade II-listed building at Television Centre, the former BBC headquarters in White City.
Synonymous with elegant West-London style, Bella Freud’s beautifully made, covetable clothing is informed by a passion for music, art and cinema, and the beguiling irreverence of rock n’ roll glamour. For Helios 710, they have created an interior that echoes spaces dear to Bella’s heart, with art and objects that share cultural references familiar from her fashion.
