Facing Cávado’s River mouth and the 18th century fort of S. João Batista, in the city of Esposende, Casa da Marginal emerges from the desire of a young couple to rehabilitate a two-story townhouse, neglected for more than 20 years.

The house, originally designed in the 1950’s by the Portuguese architect Viana de Lima, is part of a group of 8 small semi-detached summer houses, although strongly distorted from the original design, still show some traces of the original modernism.

SEA House in Esposende, Portugal by VA studio

The outer look of this patch of territory, still showing signs of rural traits, is somehow maintained by making slight corrections along the wall and by putting a new set of site access gates, that will fully preserve which is already standing and assure that it fits the surroundings. The projects’ concept had urban and landscape integration thoroughly into account – it was intended to give the structure a contemporary look, intentionally contrasting with the rustic granite walls.

Cork House in Esposende, Portugal by Arquitectos Anónimos

An unusual and inverted process. The client convinced us to accept the responsibility to build with such a low cost. The shaped carcass, stoutly wrapped with cork bricks, deals a few radical ruptures, claiming a friendly distance to the neighborhood. Inside, the expectable “ready to inhabit” combines a straight preview to the changeable future and conditions, as direct as possible-translated in interior design. Some found nicknames: “the pavillion”, “the hut”, “the cork”…
