BAID Architekten from Hamburg are responsible for the design of the ALDI Nord Campus in Essen-Kray. The new, signet-like administration building of ALDI Einkauf SE & Co. oHG will eventually provide workspace for up to 2,000 employees.
At the beginning of March, the new ALDI Nord Campus in Essen-Kray was opened after a construction period of almost three years. The building complex, which covers around 100,000 square metres, was designed by BAID Architekten from Hamburg and is a significant milestone in the corporate history of the Essen-based discount supermarket chain. On an area the size of 14 football pitches, the new building offers an ultra-modern, agile working environment. A working environment that provides plenty of room for cooperation and communication in new ways of working. The ALDI Nord Campus is thus a symbol for the transformation process of the ALDI Nord Group.
A true exclamation-point! The newly opened headquarter of the international Funke Media Group defines a coherent urban-design ensemble, which, like a well-proportioned body, is articulated as a consistent whole. Its head: the Funke Media Tower which also accommodates the News Wall, Germany's largest LED video wall. Its fingers: the surrounding buildings, laid out for variable uses, which was a crucial factor in the planning process. Pursuant to this approach, the ensemble also comprises public areas such as lobbies, restaurants, and conference rooms as well as areas of amenity and recreation. In the interior, the pronounced planning idea is inscribed in the different usable areas: newsrooms meet offices, a day-care center for children or employee training facilities. Based on the colors black, silver, and white, the design concept also references the printing process—metaphorically, the printing ink is put on white paper by silver stamps. As an architectural footnote, large stretches of cast-stone tiling in the outdoor areas, punctuated by water basins, rows of closely planted trees, and courtyard-like green areas underscore the overall urban character of the new corporate headquarters. Situated between Essen’s Grüne Mitte and Berliner Platz neighborhoods, the built ensemble of the Funke Media Office may, with the harmonious interplay of its structural parts, be read as an urban architectural statement that is newsworthy in every possible sense of the word.

In Essen (Germany) the last two blocks of a homeless shelter were handed over to the users in 2018. The three clearly structured, parallel buildings characterised by exposed concrete and sky-blue glazed bricks are the result of an invitation to tender issued by the City of Essen. What was sought were new buildings for a homeless shelter for 119 people, as well as office space for 2 social workers and 2 housing administrators. RKW Architektur + won the public tender with its modular concept. Despite or precisely because of the tight budget, the architects were able to deliver a complex of noticeable architectural quality.
The Austrian architectural office AllesWirdGut starts the new year in a big way: AllesWirdGut were commissioned to build the corporate headquarters of the international WAZ Media Group—best known in Austria a the co-owner of the leading local tabloid “Kronenzeitung”—at their corporate home base in Essen, Germany.
This project pursued two main objectives: creating generous exhibition spaces directly connected to the existing museum building and integrating the museum and the neighbouring KWI institute into a creative campus. Our strategy organized the organic integration of exterior and interior spaces through a concept of ramification.
The project Between the Waters: The Emscher Community Garden is located at one of the narrowest points on Emscher Island, between the Emscher River and the Rhine-Herne Canal. The walk through the project starts next to the Rhine-Herne Canal, with visitors entering the Community Garden; it then leads uphill beside the fully exposed water supply and treatment installation. The walk ends on an elevated platform above the Emscher River dyke. Here visitors can view the challenging topography of the landscape and see for themselves how the highly polluted (and for this reason fenced-off) Emscher River is elevated above the nearby towns, which have sunk as a result of mining activity in the previous century. Looking down the slope towards the Rhine-Herne Canal, they have a clear view of the complex water processing installation, which works with the water on the site between the two waterways.

A landmark architecture with dynamic-sculptural and technical-innovative form that promotes the values of ThyssenKrupp. Axes span spiral-like in all directions creating a centrifugal field that forms the outline of the buildings and the surrounding landscape. This spatial development evokes images of dune landscapes or glacier fields formed and polished by nature.
The project comprises the reconstruction of the listed Luisenschool to be used as a library, an administration and an exhibition area and also the new construction of an archive building.
Depot and Administration RUHR MUSEUM on the world heritage Zollverein, Essen
An extreme restraint for all structural addition within the context of the world heritage – the colliery of Zollverein with all architectural qualities and inestimable historic values – is indicated. The course of the design for the new depot of the Ruhr Museum was based on serenity and mastery. Clear geometry and decreased material selection were ways and methods for the design. On the one hand, the building is positioned into the correct context, on the other hand it abstracts and sublimates this context.
