Extending a house means reducing the exterior space of a plot. The theme of the project that we developed for the “landscape house” is the restitution of an exterior space.
This apartment in a late-60s block had hardly changed since it was built, and needed refurbishment before welcoming its new occupants. The prospective owners were instantly won over by its superb view over Lyon where the Saône flows into the Rhône.
The structure incorporates motifs from the vernacular architecture of this part of the Jura. A simple rectangular volume covered by a pitched roof is set perpendicular to the contours of the terrain and the prevailing wind. Exploiting the site’s topography and history, the basement is built into the hollow of a small disused quarry. This buried level houses utility rooms and garages accessed via a gentle ramp from the road to the north.
In the heights of Nice, the neighbourhood of the former Ray Stadium is transforming in order to accommodate some three hundred buildings and 6 000 m2 of commercial surface area, between the Gorbella Boulevard and the future Ray Park. In this densely populated neighbourhood, our project suggests offering the city a new green lung.
An urban health center, for the autonomy and involvement of people with disabilities in the city of Paris.
This project provides sheltered housing for frail, elderly residents with a variety of disabilities. The building comprises individual studio apartments, communal areas and medical consultation rooms for residents and out-patients.
To understand the project one must understand the history of the site at 232 Rue de Charenton in south-eastern Paris, along the side of which runs a passage that can be found on city plans as far back as 1789, at which time it led to cultivated fields. Fraught with real-estate related tension due to the complex planning laws in Paris and the Bercy neighbourhood, the project took seven years to see the light of day.
Being implanted up to the plot boudaries and limited on a first floor level, we were able to clear and transform the central part into a large, airy and protected yard. The constructions on stilts form wide covered playgrounds forming real exterior volumes. The student residence is taking place above, expressed in a high leveled volume as to create a distinct identity.
The ‘Simone Veil’ group of schools forms a structural element in the urban composition of the new eco-neighbourhood. It is tightly embedded in the dense urban fabric, opposite a park and straddling the maintenance workshops for the new tram line.
The new (rediscovered) wings of the Hôtel de Galliffet
Mirror reflection: strategy of lightness
The new architectural wings of the Hôtel de Galliffet will be enigmatic and surprising appearances.
Logics of composition, materials and formal repertoire push the architectural bodies towards an expressive vocabulary for which the terms of lightness and permeability prevail.
The strategy of inclusion aims to give the new buildings a kind of perceptive dematerialization; this way proceeding the partial clogging of the courts will assume a character of agreement and co-operation rather than imposition.
Finished in 2010, the Pompidou Metz center imagined by Shigeru Ban quickly became an architectural icon not only for the city of Metz, but also for the region and even the country. Given the important number of visitors to the Museum and the restaurant, the need for more inside eating space on the terrace soon became apparent. However, the idea of intervening on an existing building does not come without important implications regarding architectural integrity ― the intervention will indeed modify the façaces and volumes of the existing structure.
Macdonald had been a gigantic distribution center since the 1970s, located at Macdonald Street in Paris. OMA was the master planner of the project and their proposal was rather distinctive. They preserved the old two-storied building (which extends as long as 500m), and asked 5 other architects to work on newly added programs. We were responsible for the western part of the building, and designed facilities for a junior and senior high schools, and local sports center.
