Maison Stephane Hessel in Lille, France by JDS/JULIEN DE SMEDT ARCHITECTS

Thursday, March 10th, 2016

Article source: JDS/JULIEN DE SMEDT ARCHITECTS

The competition for a new mixed-use building in Lille piqued our interest both in its unprecedented mixture of program and its prominent triangular site in the heart of the new district of Porte de Valenciennes. The brief outlined a 70-cradle nursery, a 200-bed youth hostel, and an office dedicated to social and economic innovations all collected under one unified roof; a tall order even by multifunctional building standards. Rather than simply dividing horizontally by level or vertically by mass, our solution combines efficient organization with a programmatic strategy that converts the geometric constrictions of the site into social amenities, and resolves the seemingly contradictory functions in an intertwined social spiral.

Shopping centre Part-Dieu in Lyon, France by MVRDV

Sunday, March 6th, 2016

Article source: MVRDV

Today Gérard Collomb, the Mayor of Lyon, officially announced MVRDV’s transformation of Lyon’s large Part-Dieu shopping centre, the centre piece in a major renovation which includes the surrounding district. The scheme looks to redefine the area’s public space by creating terraces and gardens that step up into the retail complex. The new complex keeps the original identity of the Part-Dieu shopping centre through the re-use and revitalisation of its iconic yet run-down façade, which will ‘evaporate’ as it reaches the new glazed extensions that open up onto the street.

Public Library in Estaminet in Grenay, France by Richard+Schoeller architectes

Friday, March 4th, 2016

Article source: Richard+Schoeller architectes

Implanted in the inner city of Grenay (Pas-de-Calais, France), the media library offers the municipality with a cultural equipment designed to answer the need of population. The project is located at a triangular crossroad between three old mining conglomerations which used to constitute the town. The immediate urban fabric is mainly composed of pavilions and it was essential to the contractor that this location become the centre of Grenay. Before conceiving the project, the cultural team visited several European libraries. Dutch facilities and their organization of light and numerical comfort particularly caught their attention. A substantial part of the building was lifted in order to offer a view on the horizon and preserve a transparency toward the south of the city. The ground floor is thus alleviated and the visitor’s curiosity aroused by both the interiors and the light which filters through vertical slots. The entrance of the library and its general configuration contains no obstacles The smooth roof allows visitors to park their bikes underneath, meet, discuss and share ideas. The acoustics provide calm and serenity and it is possible for the readers to isolate themselves in multiple spaces which merge as a cluster toward the reception.
