OMA’s only built project in Japan up until 2012 can be found in Fukuoka. The Nexus World Housing complex was completed more than twenty-five years ago. Local developer Fukuoka Jisho commissioned Arata Isozaki to develop a masterplan that introduces a “new urban lifestyle,” for which OMA was invited as one of six architects to design a freestanding housing block.
Fukuoka is the seventh biggest city in Japan, known for its distinct cultural identity. Its central location among major cities of East Asia positions the city as a gateway into Japan, contributing to its standing as the economic center of Kyushu Island. The city has been thriving over the last decade, ranking highly in livability, ratio of younger population, and percentage of start-ups.
Fontworks renovation its Creative Lab in Fukuoka Japan. Along with this, Fontworks worked on the design of a new office with PRISM DESIGN, an international design studio in Base Shanghai and Japan.
Fontworks have formulated a company tag line called “Character More Freely”. In addition to creating a typeface that is optimal for the environment in which characters are displayed, it is essential to develop technologies that take into account the environment of the customer being used. Even in the Fukuoka Creative Lab, they have set keywords such as “Fusion of analog and digital”, “fusion of creative and engineering”, “work while playing”, and “collaboration among employees” so that we can embody “Character More Freely”.
Creche Ropponmatsu is a kindergarten located in a residential area in Fukuoka city, accepting capacity of 90 children, age between 0 to 5 years old. Emmanuelle designed the architecture, interior space, logos and graphical signage, with a vision to open a new kindergarten where children can grow up freely in mind and body. Running behind the colorful grove, this kindergarten gives opportunity for children to raise rich sensibility by feeling many colors wherever they are.
Japanese company “baLon” manages beauty salons in Japan. They have been working to create relaxing environments to make their visitors beautiful. The key point of this retail design is that they used wood and green. Their new shop “baLon.fem” in Fukuoka, however, is designed with an art gallery theme. They created “new relaxing space” for their target customers who love/follow new things/trends.
N10-House「House with View terrace」is design project located in a slightly elevated hill site on high density housing area in central part of Fukuoka City.
By highlighting the terrace and entrance wall with red cedar and tile finish, and by giving a white color finish to the parapet and half wall that extruded 2 meter away from the inner wall, it delivers a modern design with sense of three dimensionality.
At night the white mass of the building appear as if it floating in the air as the lighting turned on.
This house planned along the prefectural road at the foot of the mountain began with the consultation that a friend’s client is planning housing in his hometown. Being a quiet property except that there is a prefectural road on the north side, I tried to design such that I could obediently enjoy the grace of the land without any obstructing sunshine. We incorporated rich natural light as direct light and indirect light into architecture and planned the light sequence mainly around LDK. In the morning, when a crowd waking up in each private room on the second floor crosses the study, it awakens the body while experiencing the indirect light of the colonnade part.
M10-House 「House with Objects」 was a design planned in a corner lot in area crowded with houses and mansion right inside the heart of Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
With light court stands in its center, two volumes with different height and material articulation was neutralize by the L shape eaves element creating a modern an simple exterior appearance.
This renovation of a condominium in a complex built in 1982 in the city of Fukuoka comprises the second stage of the “Ever Design Project,” which aims to fully renovate and resell previously occupied condominiums. The design makes optimal use of the compact 50 m2 space, while also ensuring the marketability of the unit by providing future occupants with three possible layouts to choose from and significantly improving thermal performance.
The site is located on the soft ground near the lower basin of the big river. The client of this house decided to build one-storied house because the site area is wide enough, but it was necessary to reduce the foundation area because of the construction budget. So I arranged closets in the outer periphery, and attached them by the cantilevering structure.
[Modeling in the air] project is a house reconstruction plan that interconnected with a pediatrics clinics that owned by a client from Fukuoka city , Fukuoka Prefecture.
Looking at the environment of the site, on the east side the main road is flanked by a lush green park, on the north there is an existing pediatric clinic owned by the client, on the southside and westside there are adjacent housing and mansion. With three sides of the sites facing and surrounded by other existing structure it is not an ideal condition to make an opening.
