The new building of the EBS Center on the Graz University of Technology’s Inffeld grounds marks a kind of starting and end point. As a figurative punctuation mark, the built volume was articulated as a free-standing complex. The Center’s distinctive six-story east-side façade provides the urban front facing the campus. Gradated building heights descending toward plinth level make for a gentle transition to the surrounding green areas and the small-scale built neighborhood. The complex is structured into lab and research facilities, and above them, a block building used for offices. Its compact internal core with a stairwell and adjacent side rooms makes for short distances. Informal meeting booths offer privacy and add to the circulation areas. While the office spaces on the upper floors are organized in a U-shape around the building core, the communication zones are conceived as an expansion of the internal circulation areas and oriented toward the green vegetation outside.
Land Ahoy – a proposal for a lake restaurant/hotel – was selected as a finalist in an international competition. The project is the heart of a local recreation area near to the city of Graz/Austria and encourages activities that everybody is looking forward to while staying at home due to the current crisis.
“At its best, architecture has the power to transform and enrich places in a positive way. In times of crisis it is even more important that we as architects create places with remarkable recreational values, places that people can look forward to.”, says Viola Habicher of smart-voll.
This project weaves the building into the landscape – The essence of a place that aims to create an atmosphere of harmony between nature and people.
The design is based on an orchard meadow typical for the region.
Three narrow, elongated structures are set into the arena-like topography in such a way that the buildings sometimes appear to hover over or be embedded into the terrain. The landscape flows through the building. Atria reflecting the planted orchard meadow underline this creative objective.
Views of the Schöckl mountain and surrounding hilly forests and meadows are the primary influence for the space allocation plan at Josefhof. The entrance area, dining rooms and bar offer a view towards the south and north. The underlying structures are staggered so that the roofs are level with the heel of the parapet of the building above. Between the structures, the natural topography of the landscape is allowed to continue.

While developing this building two parameters had to be considered. The slanting of the sloped site with its exposed position on the one side, on the other side the organization of the entire living area on only one floor.

Graz central station, with 30,000 travelers per day, is one of the most important transport hubs in Austria. The increasing importance of the transport hub in the future requires adaption of the complex at the train station as well as the connections to public transport within the city of Graz
The new residential building Stadthaus Ballhausgasse fills a long-time void on this street in the historic city centre of Graz, Austria. The street facade interprets the design principals of the late 19th century using a contemporary language. The plasticity created by a game of light and shadow on the cornices, protruding windows and surrounding frames, as well as their arrangement, is achieved by the absorption and continuation of these elements in the new mirror-effect facade. A three-dimensional appearance, in the form of slightly inclined triangular surfaces, emerges and links the different cornice heights of the neighbouring buildings, thus making the reduced number of storeys, when compared to the late 19th century buildings, less clearly recognisable. The result is a differentiated interaction between facade and window surfaces on several levels, which reveal new details from different perspectives. As a representative view, reminiscent of the end of the 19th century, the street facade complex design and higher expenditure on materials contrasts with the unadorned courtyard facade.
