Thursday, January 24th, 2019

Article source: KIPSELI ARCHITECTS

The “Dream House” was designed with primary aim to materialize its owner’s dream. A dream of a home that will not only fulfil his functional needs and accommodate his family but also will satisfy his deepest desires, even those rising from his subconscious. On one hand his love for the old, the classic and the antiques and on the other hand his appreciation for contemporary architecture, simple geometric forms, the sense of purity and color.

ecoSuites, a reed-clad hotel in Greece, Balkans by alphataf—studio for spatial practice

Friday, November 23rd, 2018

Article source: alphataf—studio for spatial practice

Hotel extension, Tristinika Beach, Greece. The camouflaged hotel. The swimming pool facade (NE-NW) is completely covered with sliding panels clad in local reed that grows on the hotel site. The reed panels hide the full-height glass windows behind them, creating a softer, more discreet, non-reflective facade that blends into the natural surroundings. At the same time, the sliding reed panels provide sun protection and privacy to the inhabitant, as they enable guests to transform their balconies into private outdoor rooms. The SE-SW facade features vertical wooden planks, that indicate the private entrance to each suite. The wooden facade blocks direct sunlight, while letting the sea breeze circulate through the suites. The rooms of the suites flow into one another, and the huge glass sliding windows blur the boundary between inside and outside. The open floor plan and its orientation work together with the facades, keeping interiors cool during the summer heat. As the new ecoSuites are an addition to an existing hotel, the existing buildings and view orientations had to be considered. Each suite floor plan is pivoted and shifted within the building envelope for optimum orientation. The design involved local materials, local labour, handcrafted furniture and flooring. Structural steel was utilized for the frame and precast concrete for all the wall partitions. On-site construction time amounted to 4 months for 900m2.

Work nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, Mies van Der Rohe Award 2017.

The location, on a small hill, is privileged. The longitudinal field is open to the south and the view of mountain Youhtas. -How can a linear residence deal with the intense cretan light? The house necessarily unfolds along the south side, the side of the sun: through a double curvature the building is bend by the power of the sun’s path from east to west.

Epicure in Kavala, Greece by URBAN SOUL PROJECT

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018

Article source: URBAN SOUL PROJECT

The term of “epicuric” has been connected through the centuries with pleasure and good food and drink. The design concept of the bar restaurant was based on the imagination / aesthetic performance of pleasure, the one that stimulates the senses.

The bar-restaurant is situated in one of the most central locations of the city, on the waterfront of Kavala. Epicure is a modern mix of the rich, classic Viennese style with colorful pop and modern elements. The characteristic arches in the window frames and the constructions in the interior are inspired by the city’s landmark, its Roman aquaduct.

The floor plan of this enlongated store is focused on the separation of functions and the intensity of its perspective through the arrangement of the furniture and lighting fixtures.

Houses A•2 in Paros, Greece by buerger katsota architects

Sunday, November 11th, 2018

Article source: buerger katsota architects

On the Cycladic island of Paros, within an area under natural protection, the conversion of two degraded 8-room rental studio complexes into two quality holiday residences required careful renegotiations on several scales and architectural dials.

The scheme, with regards to massing and articulation, combines proportions and composition of cubic volumes, repetition and standardization of openings, generous outdoor shaded spaces and the use of environmentally friendly materials in order to redefine the complexes’ expression, achieve a plasticity of form but also an architectural unity that respects Cycladic architecture, adopts to the landscape and responds to the demands for contemporary holiday living.

The project is located in the heart of Athens. The owner, Mrs Ileana Makri is a multifaceted, talented person, a polymath. Her images and knowledge stem from her travels to various countries around the world. She is considered to be on the most important jewelry designers in Greece. Her reputation and her creations have crossed the native borders decades ago.

The starting point of our study for the design of her flagship store was the analysis of her view on design, her interests and inspirations, her images and passions that drive her creative force. Her pieces are all different from each other as if they have been extracted from different worlds, unusual, heterotopic and mysterious. Nonetheless all her work is bounded by some persistent and recurring ideas such as the quality of light their creations emit, the kin geometrical patterns, the vigorous and fine workmanship, the intricate detailing. These elements compose the heteroclite sum of ideas and experiences that are expressed in her work and all together unite in a method of work and a process of transforming memories to jewelry.

“New Lounge of Goldair Handling” design by Lefteris Tsikandilakis, at International Airport of Heraklion, Crete, Greece

Friday, September 28th, 2018

Article source: Lefteris Tsikandilakis

“Feels like home” was the main goal for this project. The design aimed to achieve the best functionality of the space despite its small size and the need for the company to serve as many people as possible. Thus, by using a curve, two comfortable areas are created, one small for the reception and one bigger as the waiting area. Moreover, another essential point was the extroversion, the need for the company’s brand to be visible from the main hall.
