Plastic surgery practice in Rhodes, Greece by dARCHstudio

Friday, June 30th, 2017

Article source: dARCHstudio

Since September 2015, the plastic surgery practice is located on the first floor of a class listed building, dating back to 1912, in the centre of Rhodes. Aiming to preserve and emphasize the new from within the old, the interior space was renovated with subtlety to be transformed into a contemporary, functional medical practice with all the necessary equipment but without losing its charm Italian-architecture characteristics. The practice is bisected by a wide airy corridor that houses the reception and lounge area, and ends in a sunny balcony at one end. From it branch the entrance, two offices, an operating room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The white color of the walls radiates a sense of cleanliness and sterility while simultaneously it stands in contrast to the colorful variety and the geometric patterns of the old floor tiles. A smooth and uniform cement mortar layer fills the voids of the floor, where the tiles are missing. All the furniture and the lighting, except for the office desks and chairs, is custom-made by the studio. The design of the furniture is inspired by the human anatomy, as well as by the important (for both architecture and plastic surgery) meaning of “section-incision”.

Residence in Herakleon, Greece by Tense Architecture Network

Saturday, April 1st, 2017

Article source: Tense Architecture Network

The location, on a small hill, is privileged. The longitudinal field is open to the south and the view of mountain Youhtas. How can a linear residence deal with the intense cretan light? The house necessarily unfolds along the south side, the side of the sun: through a double curvature the building is bend by the power of the sun’s path from east to west.

Residence in Sikamino, Greece by Tense Architecture Network

Friday, March 31st, 2017

Article source: Tense Architecture Network

The field is elongated, rural, planted with olive trees. The land is dominant. –How could a residence rise out of the ground, how could it be confined to a roof? The residence is its roof. A 60 meters long one. While approaching the plot, it can be perceived as a slightly elevated strip of earthy crust in front of the distant mountains of Euboea. It can be walked on. The roof is born from and returns back to the ground; it is planted likewise: helichrysum, drosanthemum, lavender, gauras, thyme. The roof’s shape is rhomboid and the living space is hosted under its central, maximum width area, while the sleeping quarters occupy the edges.

Hansen, Mixed Use Building in Athens, Greece by AREA, Architecture Research Athens

Tuesday, February 21st, 2017

Article source: AREA, Architecture Research Athens

This project redefines the mixed-use housing typology of the “polykatoikia”, ubiquitous in Greek cities, in one of the most dense urban neighborhoods of Athens’ center, Patissia. An L-shaped plan is dictated by site orientation and adjacent building mass, creating a small garden to the South. The vertical arrangement of different programs, typically integrated behind a uniform facade of duplicate floors, is articulated here as a “sectional” facade: individual floor levels appear to extend different lengths along the street, varying the relationship of closed to open space at each floor. Along the street, the mass of the building is lifted to provide broad visual access to the private garden, and allow room for two vehicles. At each level of the building, an exterior or transparent space \”bridges\” the street to the backyard along the East party line, whereas the most sheltered interior spaces are concentrated along the opposite party line. This results in a double strategy. On the one hand, the careful manipulation of the building code incorporates a pilotis, a pergola and covered outdoor spaces, creating a porous civic facade that subverts the requirement for the building’s mass to continue that of its neighbors. On the other hand, the near-absence of protruding balconies brings the building’s interior closer to the realm of the street.
