House 2, Yeoju House in Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea by Jin Seok Yang(Y GROUP)

Wednesday, April 11th, 2018

Article source: Jin Seok Yang(Y GROUP)

The 2nd house; A well screened and well opened house?; Yeoju House.

It’s a ‘separated yet bonded’ house where three generations live together. It’s a home for a grandmother in her 70s, a father in his late 30s and his daughter in the 1st year of middle school. The old house didn’t have a proper room for the father, so he had to live in a company dormitory. But now the father has returned home and is living in a new house with his family. Allowing the three generations to live under the same roof, this new house is a happy home for them.

Kimsclinic in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea by Wise Architecture

Article source: MasilWIDE

What shape of life can an architect suggest to people in a new town in which apartment complexes will be built? The location is the community living area in Gimpo Newtown. The building will be used for a neighbor hospital and other businesses, and we had an expectation that this building would be an open-space in such dense region.

The House of Prajna in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea by studio_GAON

Friday, April 28th, 2017

Article source: studio_GAON

<The House of Prajna> seems like a vessel heading for the woods, embraced by the forest, with the pentagon shape of building site reminding of that of ship. On the bow of ship shape, a persimmon tree over hundred year old branches its arms toward the large sky with hollowed trunk.  Although this house is a result of intentional design, I feel like it is already been completed by thousands of interactions of invisible components. Every time I visit, I feel like appreciating the work of someone else’s.

The Closest Church in Gyeonggi-do, Korea by Heesoo Kwak and IDMM Architects

Tuesday, April 11th, 2017

Article source: IDMM Architects

Buildings of the Gimpo new town, where everything looks as new, clean and as fresh as fishes caught in a milk bottle. Well-structured roads and districts look like a checkerboard that has never been used. Through local communities, this place is where ordinary lives and sentiments have just started to settle down and will attempt to engage with different urban cultures and establish its own identity. The closest church is sitting on a corner site of Unyang-dong, Gimpo. Words like corner, edge and vertex connote the existence of more than one live or surface. The church has a facade divided by two conflicting with each other at the vertex of the site. One is a solid and fragmented concrete, proposed by considering the relationship with apartment residents, and the other is a transparent glass that open views to the vast park and also to the church’s worship services. The chapel structured like the bleachers is designed to increase the capacity of the space built on a compact site. Small rooms are positioned behind of the inclined surface of the bleachers and on the top section of it so that the church can make the best use of its space. Especially the outside stairs connecting the ground and the rooftop works as an important element defining the exterior of church, and the vivid movement of its users makes the church’s architectural statement more dynamic. The rooftop space which can host outdoor worship services is open for church communities as well as for locals. The closest church is a place of worship, a cultural venue and public architecture for the local apartment community which was being choked by commercialism. A rooftop cross can’t be found here, but here the cross is leaning on the wall and speaking with a humble voice. Big resonance stirs among listeners rather than among speakers who deliver a moving story, and the sublimity dwell in intimacy not in hierarchy. The cross descended onto the earth will cast a shadow like a shaded tree and will share a story of life with people on the street.

Design a house in a residential housing area.

In Bucheon, a suburb of Seoul, there is an area called GgaChiWool. This area, which is also known for a residential housing district, has been continuously expanding. When first visited the site, housing development was already over, and new houses were almost filling the complex. The low-rise houses, the quiet footpaths, and roads to the private gardens brought great attraction of the site. However, most of the houses already built were houses that did not deviate much from the general category of multi-family houses.

Wednesday, October 26th, 2016

Article source: AND(Architecture of Novel Differentiation)

Site + Desire

Louverwall is for a couple with five cats. The husband is a music enthusiast who manages the cafe where he enjoys music, coffee, and beautiful space. He wants the café space to be vertical, transparent, and dynamic. They need a small residence on the 2nd and 3rd floors consisted of a bedroom, a living room and a small kitchen. The site is located in the newly developed mixed-use building district in Paju. The plot is surrounded by other buildings on its three sides; it is only open toward due west. Thus, the main challenge of the project is to come up with the west façade that is energy efficient and transparent.

As rapid industrialization and urbanization made people flock in the cities, housing spaces have developed by focusing on quantity rather than quality. In this background, most citizens are used to saying that “My dream is to go down to the quiet countryside and live there by building a house if I earn money.”
