Quarter of Nations in Hamburg, Germany by Gerber Architekten

At the award ceremony of 2014 “Carl-Friedrich Fischer Prize for humane housing“, the head-end buildings of the Quarter of Nations have been awarded with one of the first prizes. The Hamburg housing project impressed the Jury, consisting of Christiane Ruth Hansmann (foundation director), Uli Hellweg (IBA Hamburg GmbH) and Professor Jörn Walter (Oberbaudirektor Hamburg), with its combination of a social housing building with a passive house. Out of 90 entered projects from the Hamburg urban area, in addition to the Quarter of Nations, the “Neue Hamburger Terrassen“ (LAN Architekten) and the “Gartenquartier Kleine Horst“ (SEHW Architekten) also received awards. The award, which was first made this year, aims to promote the intention of the former Regierungsbaumeister, Carl-Friedrich Fischer, to provide humane housing in the city and nearby.

In between city and airport in the north of Hamburg an existing industrial building complex has been transformed into a think centre for emerging creative companies. The existing site with the courtyard and nearby park has gained a new cubature. Main task of the project was the revitalisation of the old industrial spaces to create a symbiosis between old and new under ecological aspects.

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have won first prize in the competition for the extension of Gebr. Heinemann Headquarters in Hamburg’s HafenCity. The new building designed for the Hamburg-based, tradition-rich trading company impressed the jury as “an independent urban-planning and architectural contribution characterized by timeless, harmoniously self-contained architecture.” Gebr. Heinemann, originally founded as a ship supplier in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt district in 1879 and now a well-known, modern Hanseatic trading house on the international travel market, invited eight architectural firms to participate in the competition.

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have won first prize in the competition for the design of the Elbbrücken Underground station. The station will be located in the future district of the same name, at the eastern end of Hamburg‘s Hafencity, and will, at least for the time being, be the end station of the recently opened U4 Underground line.

The „Centre for Speech and Movement” (SBZ), a project of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Hamburg, had its official public opening on January 16 by Hamburg Senator of Education Ties Rabe. Numerous pupils participated actively in the event. The concept of the SBZ involves physical motion in the process of Language acquisition. By activating motoric centers of the brain, speech acquisition and language acquisition is facilitated.

Hamburg`s Largest Solar-Sail Building, German architectural studio blauraum has built a railway service building with an optimal energy balance on half the amount of land occupied by the old facility. The result decreases CO2 emissions by the weight of 2 African elephants (10,635 kg/year) and saves as much energy as 6 100 square metre homes consume in a year (55,974 kWh/year).
