Woodpeckers in Hampshire, England by Strom Architects

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016

Article source: Strom Architects

Woodpeckers is a private house in the New Forest, designed as a two-storey replacement for a 1930s bungalow. The site sits amongst fields and private woodland just outside the National Park, with a heavily-treed and well-established garden.

The clients wanted a comfortable contemporary home as a weekend house, which would eventually become their permanent home in the future. With busy lives in London, they needed somewhere that they could retreat to at weekends to relax and to entertain friends. As keen gardeners and enjoying the outdoor lifestyle in the forest, they wanted a strong relationship with the garden, as well as the surrounding countryside.

Meadowcroft in Hampshire, UK by OB Architecture

Wednesday, August 10th, 2016

Article source: OB Architecture

The brief required a large contemporary family house that would take advantage of the lovely views over the fields and the Solent beyond.

The site lies within an Area of Special Character that is made up of predominantly traditional pitched roof houses, so the design of the new house had to mediate between the clients’ desire for a contemporary house and the planners’ requirements for a pitched roof form. The design also had to appear modest from the front to respect the 2-storey properties either side.

Cassion Castle Architects were commissioned to design this multi-purpose structure next to a former farmhouse in Hampshire. The client, product designer Tom Lloyd, wanted a timber building that could fulfill a series of basic functions as a studio, workshop, garage or storeroom. More importantly, he saw an opportunity to combine architecture and timber craftsmanship to create a simple yet beautiful building that would enhance its setting and complement his home. Tom commissioned Cassion Castle Architects in October 2011 and was closely involved in all aspects of the design.
