Patalab were commissioned to transform a detached Arts and Crafts townhouse in Hampstead for a local family with three small children. The brief was to create an airier, lighter and more contemporary feel for the young family’s home and their modern art collection. It was also important to increase the overall floor area.
Patalab opted for an approach that expands the house horizontally thus making most of the spacious garden that surrounds the building. Many of the original features inside the house were retained, such as the central staircase and timber wall paneling but these were treated with white paint wash to achieve a less oppressive and more spacious appearance.
These two new houses on a constrained brownfield site offer contemporary design within a predominantly Edwardian environment. We overcame challenges including complex party wall conditions, a tight footprint, conservation area setting, constraints regarding the relationship with neighbouring buildings and the presence of a rail tunnel beneath. The homes are spacious, light and airy, with generous external terraces and balconies compensating for the lack of garden space.
Situated in the heart of Hampstead Village, our proposal for this once rambling 18th century listed building was developed with local conservation authorities to respect the picturesque setting of the High Street and Perrin’s Court. As a result the external appearance harmonises with the historic setting, whereas the interior by contrast enabled us to design a series of bright and contemporary spaces enhanced with bespoke joinery and panelling.
This extension and remodeling of a Grade II listed Georgian town house by Belsize Architects rejects a traditional brick extension in favour of a more contemporary design, thereby providing greater interest and allowing the extension to read clearly as a separate yet sympathetic addition.
The house, a grade 2 listed building, set opposite Hampstead Heath was designed by Ewen Christian, an RIBA president and Gold medalist, and built in 1881. The brief was to return the 900 sqm four storey building, previously divided into four flats, into a single-family home and to add a new subterranean swimming pool to the side of the house and a garage for 3 cars over the pool.
Our brief was to refurbish a typical late Victorian mid-terraced house in Hampstead, London. The original property contained some Arts and Crafts influenced decorative aspects, which the owners were keen to retain and highlight, while introducing contemporary interventions to create fresh, modern living spaces.
