Article source: GFD

Mr. Cai Yuanpei, the leading educator in early twentieth-century China, stressed the importance of aesthetic education in one of his books and pointed out that aesthetic appreciation capability largely depends on whether one is cultured and educated. In modern era, the ability of appreciating beauty is beneficial to study, work, socializing and daily life.

In daily life, most of our time is spent in living spaces. No longer just requesting peace and comfortableness, more and more modern people are seeking to showcase their aesthetic taste in their homes. People, space and art integrate and interact in “home”, which shapes ideal lifestyles.

The project is a model villa located in Hangzhou, China. Through incorporating art and humanism into the space, it presents the owner’ taste of life from different perspectives, and sets an example for contemporary large-scale residences.

Oriental Villa in Hangzhou, China by GOA

Friday, September 27th, 2019

Article source: GOA

The project is a duplex house that attempts to combine tradition with modern style in design. Modern lightness and traditional heaviness are unified and fully expressed in this project.

The overall planning of the project emphasizes the central axis, with the neighborhood center, infinity pool and central green space on the central axis, introducing the canal landscape into the house garden to integrate with the surrounding landscape. This project emphasizes centripetal force and ceremonial sense to create a noble shared space of the house garden. The layout along the river is relatively free, and the scattered layout makes full use of the landscape resources, so that the rear houses also have the broad view and canal landscape.

Extending the Existing GDA Plaza in Hangzhou, China by gmp · Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner

Article source: gmp · Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner

A new high-rise building makes its impact on the skyline of Hangzhou, the Chinese metropolis with 9 million inhabitants. The 130-meter-high tower is part of the extension and redesign of the GDA Plaza, a business center in the traditional business quarter of the city, which includes a shopping mall and hotel. Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), who had previously won the competition, were in charge of the design and implementation.

West Lake is considered a focal point and special attraction of the old, traditional city of Hangzhou. Its exemplary cultivated landscape is an outstanding feature of this 9-million-person metropolis to the south-west of Shanghai and, in 2011, was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. At Wulin Square, in the midst of the flourishing business center not far from the lake, the GDA Plaza Hotel and Business Center was reopened. As part of a redesign and extension, the existing complex with hotel and shopping mall was recreated and made into a completely new unit. The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), who had previously won the competition in 2007, were in charge of the design and implementation. At one cor-ner, the GDA Plaza was substantially extended by a new 28-story building with a gross floor area of 57,500 square meters, whilst the existing main building was retained as far as possible but completely reorganized. This has created additional offices and commercial premises, as well as new leisure facilities such as cinemas and restaurants.

A Quality Paradigm in the City of Ideal Living

The famous Italian semiotician Umberto Eco once said: “If other countries have the theory of design, then Italy has a philosophy and ideology of design”.

Both traditional complexity and contemporary simplicity have been perfected to the outmost in this artistic country. Rimadesio, a furniture brand born in Milan in 1956, inherits Italy's minimalist gene.

A. Mono Coffee Shop in Hangzhou, China by Office PROJECT

Thursday, May 9th, 2019

Article source: Office PROJECT

As a French patisserie, the owner came up with a mystical name called A.Mono (Arrival to Mono), ‘mono’ originated from a Japanese aesthetic theory (Mono-ha), which emphasize the relationship between one object to another. Applying this theory onto this building, human can be considered as one of the ‘object’, same to nature, therefore the relationship between human, object and nature, these three elements become the foundation of the design.
