The Great Rock was created during the major reconstruction of the Zoo between 1909 and 1912, based on the specialist instructions of the Zoo Construction Committee in the capital. The zoological tasks were supervised by the director of the zoo at the time, Dr Adolf Lendl, and the construction technology aspects by Dr Kornél Neuschloss. The primary purpose of the artificial rock was to help the Zoo, that already operated on a overly tight area, appear larger and provide greater space. Thus instead of the completely flat area, with the vertical elevation, a divided and at the same time larger surface would be created with the latest and most spectacular animal runs of the time.
The site is situated in the Karancs-Medves landscape area in North-East Hungary. Around and in the city of Salgótarján the memorials, geological and mining attractions are forming a hiking trail. Along this trail is set the „Dance floor” Recreation and Memorial Park. The site is embraced by the surrounding hills and huge hillside trees. In our architectural concept we aimed to preserve and strengthen this special character of the place. The park would function as an exhibition for the mining memorials and as a natural recreational area. The organising element in the park is a wall providing covered space. This space can be used for exhibitions and performances. Open air theatre may also function here, the covered space is used for stage and the “Dance floor” as auditorium.

The idea of the architect was to endow the building with a modern and esthetic appearance using traditional local materials. That’s why light plaster was selected together with ceramic roof tiles and plenty of wood – for terraces, for pergolas and for shields. Thanks to the flood forests – in this part of the country wood has always been available for building village houses. Willow tree is probably the most characteristic tree of the region, twigs and branches of willow trees were wickered to create usefull household objects, such as baskets, armchairs, etc. This tradition was continued in the interior decoration of the spa – the reception desk was made of wickered willow tree, as well as the lampshades of suspension lamps and of consoles, and wicked willow branches were used to shape chests of drawers – all that was hand made by local ladies, in accordance with the local patriot attitude of the owner.

The Witness Hills illustrate the original height of the previously eroded and weathered area. These hills do not form a chain, but are solitary islands that stand alone preserving a specific stratification that arose from the former Pannon sea. Millions of years ago at the deepest part of the Pannon Sea that covered the Balaton Highland and the entire territory of the country, violent volcanic activity took place.
We’ve seen many mentionable solutions for rehabilitation of unfunctional industrial buildings that have lost their original functions. Attaching new functional buildings to their close environment basically determine the new character of the place. Because their industrial origin these types of constructions and their environment – with different designation – have no connection, essentially no question about it. As the place is rehabilitated and gets back to life we can take the question about the method and the mode. The intervention depends on the actual context, that can be:
We have already made designs for SZÁMALK before, such as the reconstruction of their 40-year-old headquarter. Among those plans, the 242 people capacity lecture hall of the center building at Etele Street was realized.
In 2006, the Municipality of Budaörs city announced a national competition for the design of its new elementary school with 24 classrooms. Though our proposal won third prize, the contract eventually was given to our office. The competition demanded an extremely elaborate program on a narrow, triangular plot. Besides the 24 classrooms and the necessary field rooms, a fully fitted hot kitchen for the capacity of 500 people, the attached restaurant, a separable gymnasium including 2 basketball fields and changing rooms were to be allocated.
The new Capsula Multi-brand Store is a stunning and elegant space located on Andrassy Avenue, an iconic boulevard in Budapest dating back to 1872, lined with spectacular neo-renaissance mansions and townhouses featuring fine-facades and interiors. In 2002 it was recognized as a World Heritage site. It is also one of Budapest’s main shopping streets, with high fashion stores, trendy restaurants and richly decorated cafés.
This historic building functioned as a military school in the past was built in 1897. the original house was almost 100m long then an event hall was attached to it in 1926. In the following decades a new wing for further functions was joined. in this more recent alteration, the vision of practice Vikár & Lukács Architects Studio was to demolish the attached parts and rethink the building while retaining its original form. According to these plans it was completed with a glass facade parallel with the old building, making the new floor plan to meet the requirements of modern times.
Vikár & Lukács architects studio won the commission for this project on a competition for a new iconic headquarter of the hungarian autoklub. The main gesture of the building is a ribbon that wraps around the office spaces on seven floors, while articulating a letter ‘a’. As the site is located near the danube bridge, local politicians appreciated to have a building that works as a point of orientation for drivers that arrive to district ujpest.
