County World War I & II Veterans Memorial in Peoria, Illinois by Jeffery S. Poss Architect

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Article source: Jeffery S. Poss Architect

From the historical perspective of six decades, we can begin to understand the essential relationship between the two world wars. It is therefore fitting that Peoria County has envisioned a single project that commemorates both wars.  The Memorial features three similar white granite columns in two groups to represent the roman numerals “I” and “II.”  The columns are supported on black granite plinths. The plinths act as “cenotaphs”, or empty tombs, inscribed with the names of the county veterans who lost their lives in the wars. The memorial honors the 28,000 men and women from Peoria County who served during World War I & II.

United Continental Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

Article source: Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura

The project for this 50-storey office block sought to favour the possibility of a panoramic view over the city, so that there is an evident predominance of glass on the façade while nevertheless avoiding the formulaic glass tower of arbitrary forms. The existence of the American tradition of skyscraper construction, with some especially attractive examples inChicago, suggested the need to reestablish a dialogue between the classicism of stone and the high-tech of glass.

CYBORGS

The proposed Dance Center explores the idea of superimposition and cybernetic assemblages. By combining and overlaying organic, natural, smooth systems with machine-like, synthetic, rigid ones, a deeper experience of architectural space is achieved. Cyborg as an idea and image has informed much of the process where new nature, transformation and time are central themes. Through exploitation of cyborg vocabulary such as plug-ins, prosthetics, new skins and add-ons an architectural Cyborg is developed.

Nunnmps – Brief Description

Nunnmps, Chicago is an information technology system development, security and service office. The site is located in South Chicago, bordering Lake Michigan.

The project consists of a 50,000 square meter design and research studio in addition to surrounding public open space and natural landscape. One third of the building encompasses the design and research studios and support areas. Since the studio projects are of a strategic nature and highly confidential, the building is lifted above ground, high above the crowns of trees, floating like clouds, overlooking the distant skyline. The remaining two thirds of the office space exist within its subterrain. It accommodates a reception area and a large open administration office with mushroom-like cores penetrating the ground to connect both parts of the Nunnmps.
