Article source: Studio Velocity

Housing for married couples and children located in Aichi, Japan. The surrounding area is different from the well-maintained cityscape, and there is a narrow and diagonal road that remains from the old days, and you can see irregular sites. The site was irregular due to the proximity of narrow roads running diagonally. There are many houses around the site with fences and hedges. The issue was how to relate this to the spatial composition.

Konohana house in Osaka, Japan by suite plus

Tuesday, May 5th, 2020

Article source: suite plus

This project was for a house located in the corner of a densely populated area with various houses of different age, height, frontage, and color. The site is at the corner of a road with heavy traffic day and night despite its narrowness, and the adjacent house is built so close together, nearly touching the site boundary. Considering the noise and privacy, it was inevitable to adopt a structure that is closed to the surrounding environment. Therefore, the challenge was to prevent the room from having a locked-up feeling and to incorporate the natural environment.

Two apartment buildings around a Roji Park in Chiba, Japan by SO & CO.

Thursday, March 12th, 2020

Article source: SO & CO.

The site is located in a 5-minute walk from the station of Funabashi (Chiba, Tokyo), near the Keisei elevated tracks where an alley gives access to both of them.

Funabashi is a major bed town if the metropolis developed after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and, even now, is still under expansion.

Even though the station area is completely renewed and the north-south main roads are under maintenance, around the site you will find an old-aged residential area full of wooden buildings squeezed in a tight net composed of small alleys.

K5 Tokyo in Japan by Claesson Koivisto Rune Architects

Wednesday, March 11th, 2020

Article source: Koivisto Rune Architects

K5 Tokyo, housed in a converted 1920s bank building, sits beside the Tokyo Stock Exchange and connects the traditional Imperial Palace area with hip Eastern Tokyo.

The Japanese word ‘Aimai’ guides K5 Tokyo’s concept. It means vague, obscure or ambiguous, which in Japanese is often used in a positive, poetic sense. (The term denotes the benefits of erasing borders.) K5 Tokyo’s functions intentionally intermingle: The library is the bar, while the coffee shop doubles as a lounge, which flows into a wine bar and restaurant.

Thursday, March 5th, 2020

Article source: Ryu Mitarai & Associates, Architects

The building is located in Shioya Town, Shioya County, Tochigi Prefecture. Surrounded by the houses and fields that have Ohya stone warehouses, the scenery continues to be long and quiet.

The family keeps this large land from generation to generation, where there is a main house, a remote, a storehouse, a store, a well, a field, a garden. And when the young son got married, he told me that he wanted to make another one away.

House OM in Okinawa, Japan by STUDIO MONAKA

Monday, March 2nd, 2020

Article source: STUDIO MONAKA

Nestled on a lot seven meters below the street frontage, this home required careful consideration on how it looked from slightly above, due to the higher ground level when approaching the building. Not only that, the final sewage drainpipe was located 1.5 meters above the ground, requiring the floor of the bath and toilet to stand higher than the rest of the rooms. On another note, the client asked for this dwelling to convey a feeling of departure from the ordinary, such as that of a resort hotel. We proceeded with the design task keeping these conditions and requests in mind while respecting the Okinawan climate and culture.

The central theme of the project is playing with contrasts at different levels, being the main characteristic of the store the clash between the high-tech and low-tech. All the strategic decisions and material choices are made seeking a sophisticated balance between the roughness and the delicateness, the chaos and the order.
