Opens the temple to community as a place to interact with “life”
In recent years, the decay of local communities due to urbanization has changed the Japanese sense of religion including ancestor worship, weakening the “Jidan” (system where commoners had to register with a temple to prove their Buddhist faith) which is the financial basis of many temples in Japan. Charnel house, which is a new style of grave that appeared as though it responded to the trend of the contemporary times, is different from the graveyard passed down from generation to generation and does not follow the traditional Jidan system.
House with 30,000 Books is a residence for two families, which has a large library between those two dwelling parts. As the name suggests, the number of books the library can store is about 30,000, which almost equals to the number of books that one small public library can store. The library space, sometimes works for bonding two families, sometimes works as a buffer space, is the common property for them and the most spacious place of this house.

It was such a great honor for me to design the renovation of my favorite building that I used to see every day. It is a house built in Aya-cho, Miyazaki Prefecture, which has the largest evergreen forest zone in Japan. There were three conditions on the premises.
1) There are restrictions on color and form because it is within the landscape area.
2) The traffic volume is high along the main road.
3) Leave a wonderful cherry tree on the site.
While fulfilling these three conditions, I aimed for a house that melts while giving stimulation to the cityscape.
