Bob Chen Design Office completed a 100-year-old village reconstruction project in Wuzhen. The owners are part of the new generation of rapid urbanization. They saw opportunity in the disorderly development outside the official scenic spot and an apparent conflict with traditional lifestyles. Traditional regionalism is not the only characteristic of Wuzhen. Daily village life and Jiangnan regionalism can, and should, include urban cosmopolitanism and high-class experiences. They discovered Tanjiaqiao Village, then entrusted Bob Chen with creating a new exploration in urbanization development and village reconstruction in Wuzhen.
Located in Guangchen Town, Pinghu City, Spring Breeze is estimated to occupy 4363 mu of land with a total investment of ¥10 billion. It is expected to be built into a complex featured town and health industry demonstration zone for endowment, tourism and agriculture after 5 to 10 years of input and development. Separated from Shanghai by a river, the town embraces winding streams and crossing water branches which cover an area of 300 mu. Blessed with extraordinary ecological environment, it becomes popular among people who hope to find another residence around Shanghai.
As one of the important group involved in the rapid development of Chinese cities, farmers’ self-building has distinctive Chinese characteristics. Under the mode of rapid expansion and construction, it has a group of morphological characteristics – individual independent colors and decorative elements pieced together by various styles. Farmers’ self-built houses have spanned an era. They have replaced traditional wooden houses in the rapid development of urban construction. In today’s urban renewal, they have gradually become ruins and problems in the development of new towns under the influence of land acquisition and demolition.
With the new winning competition entry for the Jiaxing University Library & Media Center, LYCS seeks to break antiquated design conventions by intelligently negotiating contemporary architectural design into the traditional Chinese campus. Surrounded by rich woods and luscious water, the 42000m2 library plays with hierarchy – the hierarchy of multiple, increasingly private spaces; the hierarchy of the pace of spatial experience; and the hierarchy of introversion and extroversion.
