This project is a private house in Sagamihara, Kanagawa. This building faces toward a park and a river while keeping privacy. For all of the family to be able to always feel a sign of them, the living room, dining room and kitchen is in one big space, divided only by the steps.
It is a two-story building with a unique floating floor and an open ceiling, which is connected to a working space and a Japanese-style room on the second floor. In the dining room, a big umbrella shaped light is hung so as the family can gather and have a meal together under it. The site is quite narrow, but with the open ceiling and steps, the space can feel wider.
Deliverables included an environment suitable to the school’s educational policy, namely, bringing up children both physically and mentally that can think, learn and act on their own initiative.
Thus, we set out to create a space that would promote a variety of uses and encourage children to come up with their own games as they would do in nature by recreating geographical features inspired by nature’s most beautiful assets; its colors and lakes.
This is the project for a residence on the mountain slope with incredible ocean views including the view of Mt. Fuji.
Looking at the site context, it is not possible to have a view of the sea from the 1st floor level, 2nd floor level has ocean view but not easy to keep privacy from the back street, and only 3rd floor level has full ocean view. According to the site condition each floor is designed differently. The 1st floor has minimum floor area with de-formed concrete columns to create diagonal movement for enjoying outside activities, the 2nd floor has bedrooms like concrete shells and the 3rd floor has maximum floor area by cantilever with light weight wooden structure. Then the 3rd floor has a panoramic ocean view as the main space of the house.
The KUGENUMA-Y House is located close to the sea in Shonan. It is a house with a simple structure, including a 5-storey Raw Concrete and a 6-storey steel slope of 150 m full length.
The first thing the owner asked of the architects was the 15 m height of the house, which could be accessible no matter what. The owner’s general way of life and the determination to live near the sea was therefore considered. A striking, light, and generous architecture that embodies the desired way of living for this owner was the appropriate design direction. Additionally, in that area near the sea, the architecture needed to be strong enough to survive. It was accordingly felt that the building needed to be bold enough.
This row-house-style apartment building in a high-density residential neighborhood is designed around the theme of spatial rhyming. The challenge was to create six three-story units that give residents the freedom to live as they choose, with a sense of both individuality and belonging, yet also maintain a consistent tone throughout the building in other words, to flexibly adapt to a wide range of design conditions. The site has an elevation drop on its southern side, which enabled a stepped design for the roof and unit interiors that blocks visibility where needed and brings natural light and ventilation into the residences. Through a composite design that is horizontally sectioned and vertically layered, we succeeded in achieving both a unified overall look with pronounced shadows and a set of six distinctive units.
This house was designed for an international couple based in Japan, France, and the United States – a French artist and his Japanese wife – who are keenly interested in the aesthetic of Japanese gardens, as well as Japanese culture and architecture.
The menu offers meat dishes cooked using a dynamic flame paired with select wines with character. Deliverables included a space that would embody and convey this appetizing experience.
We sought to fill the entire space with the energy resonating from the intensity of the flame and diverse colors of the wine.
The ceiling plane reveals a multilayered body of flame energy by combining red latticework conveying the intensity of the steeply spiraling flame as well as red plates coated with a special finish representing the strong flickering of the flame.
This is a nursery which parents found, who want to raise children in rich nature environment. To meet their expectation, by making use of rich nature surrounding it, the nursery is planned to design where children can feel nature in a whole day, and play excited and stimulating, so that they can develop their sensibility and creativity.
This is an extension to an existing circuit board factory located near Atsugi base. The first floor area, which had originally been planned as a workshop, was changed to be used as a showroom and a multi-purpose space for local community, and therefore versatility and openness were required. Furthermore, since future reconstruction of the currently used factory building was under consideration, we tried to design an extension allowing for multiple uses, while providing adjustable spaces and programs in accordance with the active involvement of users. This building is constructed of a frame structure model designed to accommodate various conditions and requirements, as well as fitting and hardware elements allowing fine tuning by improving their adjustability and renewability. Those spaces in the building are characterized by the composition juxtaposing those elements without losing their original characteristics.
This project involved redesigning the former illegal sex shop (common name is “Chonnoma”) to the artist in residence as part of “Koganecho Bazaar 2016”
“Koganecho Bazaar” is an art festival held every year since 2008, in Koganecho area of Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture. Therefore, Koganecho has art everywhere, the town itself is the exhibition space. We thought to cut into the long and narrow space of the existing building and to create oblique facade with depth from frontal road. CUT is continuous with the town, and it becomes an exhibition space where people going around are pulled in by having a different axis from the surrounding building.We converted from negative situation with activity hidden from town by spatial form of “Chonnoma” to positive situation with activity opened to town by CUT.
