Le 49 in Kanagawa, Japan by APOLLO Architects & Associates

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Article source: APOLLO Architects & Associates

Located on Mount Kamakura, this site boasts a stunning view overlooking Sagami Bay. The clients, a husband-and-wife couple who had been living in a high-rise condominium in downtown Tokyo, fell in love with the location at first sight, taking an instant liking to the view and the lush green surroundings, and decided to move here. The husband is a keen architecture buff who went on architectural tours throughout Europe to see buildings while he was working in the UK, and decided to commission a new residence with an attached workshop for his wife. Accordingly, we decided to create a modern piece of architecture whose every detail would convey a uniquely Japanese aesthetic to the international guests who would visit.

Article source: NOA Architect & Associates

The site is located on elevated ground in Izumi Ward, Yokohama City, with a panoramic view toward the southwest of the mountain range as well as Mount Fuji. The main exterior concept of this house is simplicity and abstraction of daily life. The husband, an outdoor enthusiast, requested a garage space for both a car and a bicycle. When entering the house, visitors are greeted by a large Profilit glass wall. An indoor courtyard was built in such a way as to be enclosed by the glass wall, offering the viewer an unexpected surprise from its exterior conditions.

Wind-dyed House in Kanagawa, Japan by Kazuhiko Kishimoto / acaa

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Article source:  Kazuhiko Kishimoto / acaa

A residential building located halfway up a cliff, overlooking the ocean. Thick clumps of trees that grow along the slope of the land surrounding the house cast a series of organic silhouettes that make the slope seem to come alive. We decided that the appropriate form to build would be as low-lying as possible, while also allowing the architecture to become embedded in the surrounding landscape according to the contours of the terrain. This would allow us to minimize the impact of the building on its environment. The design of the walls plays an important role in creating the overall sense of presence that a building projects. As such, we also tried to prevent the walls of this house from becoming surfaces that would obstruct or impede movement and sight. Glass and screens along the enclosed perimeter of the house gives the second floor of this residence a certain transparency. Slender, deep-set eaves cast deep shadows on the facade of the building, softening the impact of the building’s physical presence in relation to its environment.

The Japanese title “in kyo” is derived from a calm life apart from the active world for the rest of their days. Excessively ornamented mansions showing off surround the site in a rich green residential area. This modest house concealed its appearance in plant open to a neutral space such as a courtyard, a terrace, a garden, and the sidewalk between outdoor and indoor without steps.

Comprehensive Building Renovation

In Japan, the lifetime of buildings is very short; they often get scrapped and rebuilt after 30 to 40 years. Recently, however, there are movements to enlarge the market for not only newly built, but also quality pre-owned condominiums, and to extend the lifetime of such residential buildings. Previously owned condominium residences have the following advantages: 1) Prices are less expensive, 2) Prices depreciate less than new construction, and 3) Conditions of the management, maintenance and residents are already known. As for asset value, prices tend not to drop for properties located in proximity to a city center with conveniences and in a good neighborhood environment. In addition, unlike units ready for sale, renovation allows a layout and interior finish to match personal tastes.

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Article source: Takeshi Hosaka Architects

This is a house in which residents live under natural lighting from the sky. The site is five minutes walk from the railway station, and it is surrounded by a mixture of detached dwellings and 10-floor condominiums and office buildings. In this location nested in a valley between buildings, the light streaming down from the sky above felt precious. A couple with two children planned to build their home in this spot.
