Warm Nest in Knokke-Heist, Belgium by Ark-shelter + ARCHEKTA

Thursday, May 4th, 2023

Article source: Ark-shelter + ARCHEKTA

Designing a healing and restorative facility like a Maggie centre is an honour for any architect. Many architects have designed Maggie centres before such as Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas and many more, it was inevitable to do research on what was designed before. Seeing this project as a snapshot in the long list of initiatives to support truly restorative design, one piece to contribute to the honourable path of creating healthy and healing environments.

The AZ-Zeno hospital is the client and was in touch with the Maggie care organisation. They were inspired by the Maggie care philosophy and make this the first Maggie care inspired facility in Belgium.

West Side Residence in Knokke-Heist, Belgium by De Baes Architects

Thursday, January 19th, 2023

Article source: De Baes Architects

Turning a crumbling structure into a high-performing and sustainable residential building that saves 72,000kWh of electricity a year.

More than half a century after a construction boom replaced the ornate Belle Epoque homes along Kokke’s coastline, the area is now filled with outdated, functionalist structures nearing the end of their lifespans. The West Side Residence was one such example. This post-war structure of little architectural value was crumbling and either needed to be repaired or demolished and replaced. The problem was deciding which. Some owners wanted to keep their apartments, while others wanted new, up-to-date homes.

644 – Matuvu Square in Knokke-Heist, Belgium by Philippe SAMYN and PARTNERS sprl, architects & engineers

Thursday, May 2nd, 2019

Article source: Philippe SAMYN and PARTNERS sprl, architects & engineers

The sea evokes dreams. Adorned with the verses of Eluard, the Poet, the bronze sculpture by artist Ossip Zadkine, tells all of this on Albertplein, once the dynamic, beating heart of Knokke-Heist. The goal of this project is to breathe new life into that heart, to invite people to look, to see, to dream their life under the sunlight and in front of the sea, of which Albertplein will become an extension. The Albertplein bears the name of two of our former kings. It is located in Knokke-Heist, but it represents Belgium itself: a mix of people from Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. It is also a square where a certain idea of harmonious ambiguity takes place, haute couture standing alongside coolers plainly and simply. It is called “Matuvu square” for a reason (litterally: “show-off square”). The project aims at highlighting the richness of this setting. A glazed pavilion at the centre of a body of water The central hemispherical pavilion is an ode to light. As music relates to silence, reflection relates to transparency, and shadow to light. Hence the dome’s pattern, consisting of two types of “super crystal clear” glass. One half of the triangles consists of regular clear reflective glass, whereas the other half consists of the same glass, treated with a very special coating, which makes almost all reflections disappear. This effect of endlessness and freedom is strengthened by the reflecting pool around the pavilion, visually giving it the scope of a full sphere.

School Campus De Vonk – De Pluim in Knokke-Heist, Belgium by NL Architects

Passiefschool

To accommodate the merger of two primary schools the city of Knokke-Heist has developed an ambitious project: a so-called Passiefschool. The building has to comply with the highest environmental standards which should lead to a maximal consumption of 15 kWh per square meter for heating and cooling. A number of measures have been taken, some technical and some architectonic, to reach this goal. So besides triple glass, heavy duty insulation and the ‘Canadian Well’ for instance, the building features a ‘Volcano’ for night ventilation and a multifunctional porch to block the direct rays of the sun.

ELEMENTARY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL IN OPEN LANDSCAPE | OPEN CALL ORGANISED BY THE FLEMISH GOVERNMENT ARCHITECT, 2nd LAUREATE

The historical permanent presence of the polder landscape is experienced as a quality of the site that is to be protected, and it is also used as a source of design choices. The typology of the school buildings is designed analogous to that of the polder farms as solitary volumes in the landscape. The outdoor space is structured as a landscape similar to the diverse and flexible patchwork of different fields in the polder.

BUSINESS COMPLEX BUILDING ‘T WALLETJE KNOKKE-HEIST in Belgium by BURO II & ARCHI+I

Saturday, May 3rd, 2014

Article source: BURO II & ARCHI+I

The business complex building is designed as an expansion of an existing business site. A substantial green strip makes for a buffering for the village centre of Westkapelle.

The business complex building is the start for the completion of the third phase of the business site. The premise for the design was, on the one hand, to create a landmark, but on the other hand, to also create modularity and fl exibility, accessibility and sustainability.

Sea Side Appartement in Knokke-Heist, Belgium by OOZE

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Article source: OOZE

Knokke-Heist is a mythical “cité balnéaire” in Belgium. The apartment lies on the 2nd floor with a view over the Rubensplein.

Despite its generous size, the typology of the flat is very long and narrow which makes the current layout very inefficient with regard to corridors and effective living spaces. A clear reorganization of the internal partitions and bathroom layouts enables us to develop a new specific concept not only for the space and the materials, but also for the display of the client art collection, a mini “personal museum” A frame to look out at the ocean and towards the beach in the daytime, the apartment becomes a glowing space to look into at night time.
