SUNSET TERRACE in Laguna Beach, California by Martin Fenlon Architecture

This 1,480 sf. house has been built on a lot of only 2,400 sf. in an area known as Sunset Terrace in Laguna Beach, California. It is anchored to the site by a helical form that allows the surrounding space, seemingly compressed, to pass through it.

The house is comprised of a ground floor living level and garage with a bedroom level perched on top. After a lengthy variance process, an existing masonry garage was incorporated into the design when permission to reuse it was granted by the city. There are roof decks on the second level where it is set back at the front and rear yards in accordance with the zoning requirements.

Nestled at the end of a cul-de-sac in a private southern California beach community, this house occupies a site with spectacular vistas of the Pacific Ocean. The compound is entered along a fifty-foot long sustainable-growth hardwood (ipe) wall.

The house is an expansive series of spaces underneath a giant floating horizontal plane which is supported on stone masses, wood walls, and slender steel columns.

Mintzer Residence in Laguna Beach, California by Horst Architects

Carefully sited to embrace a large rock outcropping on a hillside site in Laguna Beach, California. The design of this project began from an initial conversation between owner and the architect while standing together on the site. They imagined a design, which through it’s materiality and physical lightness, would lead to a clear mediation between the structure and the site. The conversation evolved into a metaphorical narrative of two wooden shipping containers which fell onto the site from a cargo plane, one laying horizontally and the other standing vertically on the site.
