The Caramão neighborhood in Lisbon, was built between 1940 and 1945 on the slope of Ajuda facing the Tagus and above the Restelo neighborhood.
Along with other social housing in Lisbon, such as Caselas, this neighborhood was designed to represent small villages that provided, in the style of adjustment, a similar type of life of the more humble part of society, to which they were accustomed to and also occupied at the date of its construction.
“From the first day we visited this site, we understood the potential of this curious layout. It resembled a maze with several heights, features we ended up exploring on a deeper level later.
This house is located in an early 50´s residential neighborhood, more precisely at the western edge, in an area surrounded buy terraced houses, near the Restelo shopping street.
The design consists of the refurbishment and expansion of an existing building in one of Lisbon’s historic neighbourhoods. The vernacular characteristics of the front facade were refurbished and clarified. Inside the design aims to create and free space on each floor, enhancing its size and scale, and creating a dialogue between the front and back facades, enabling light to entre through both directions. All technical aspects inherent to a contemporary family house are resolved through a block at the centre of each floor, liberating the side walls, unveiling both facades.
The initial assumption was simple: updating the Reception and Foyer image and layout of Tonik Health Club – located in one of the premium locations of Lisbon, Laranjeiras.
This intervention seeks to maintain only the two main existing facades of the building, at North and East, given the high degree of deterioration of the overall volume. Although the existing building is not a remarkable architectural example and with construction quality, contributes to the cohesion of the urban image of the set to which it belongs, so the maintenance of facades allow the continuity of the dialogue between the building and the context in which it operates.
ARCHmedium’s four-month competition was held between July and October 2014, and invited teams of students and young architects from across the globe to propose “good architecture for the people” of Portugal, who were severely affected by the global financial crisis of 2008.

The Project is about the reconstruction of a building located in Lisbon’s historical city centre.
The existing building in an advanced degradation condition and lacking architectural quality was demolished and completely rebuilt, reshaping its compartmentalization, without distorting the memory of the environment in order to preserve the urban heritage of the neighbourhood, but guided by a contemporary intervention that marks the time of its execution.
