The Serra da Estrela Restaurant underwent a remodeling intervention to adapt it according to the brand concept of this famous chain of restaurants, known for its characteristic dishes of the gastronomy of the mountainous regions in the interior of Portugal.
The project consists in converting an industrial warehouse into a space with two main uses: 1) temporary accommodation specifically conceived for groups of people 2) organisation and promotion of events (cultural, social, marketing, etc.).
The initial strategy was to try to combine these two realities by creating a set of common areas for the living space with strong character and materiality in order to serve both situations.
Formalized as a geometric and abstract city, built by large yellow cubes, the Nadir Afonso Temporary Museum is an open and fluid space that seeks to create numerous visual and conceptual relationships with the work of the abstractionist artist and Portuguese architect.
The grid has a particular power that extends way beyond its graphical presence. In art, it appeared as an optical device for visual explorations on perspective, particularly intense in the times of Paolo Uccello. In cartography, Cartesian coordinates have occupied extensively the world of maps as a reference system since the 17th century.
The particularity of the grid, as Rosalind Krauss has expressed in her 1980 article “Grids” published in the magazine October, is its capacity to mask and reveal, setting a seemingly ordered play of appearance and disappearance. What it reveals is what might appear over the grid once it is laid out. What it masks or occults is a pre-existing condition that its own laying out has covered, as an erasing action over a prevailing context.
Troviscal village still has a rural character. The existing houses, generally isolated, and very often with a single-storey structure, reveal the agricultural fields.
The house to be recovered, brought something new. Perhaps it was not the most erudite architectural model – but it had a character.
Probably builted in the 40s or 50s, it reflected a language with Brazilian references, between the neo-neo-classical and the picturesque, stimulated by the wild garden and beautiful trees.
Any kind of intervention in this space should not interfere with the existing one. More than proposing it was necessary to omit, more than designing it was necessary to recover and integrate, more than composing it was necessary to be simple and silent with rigour in response to new needs. The apartment is integrated in a building originally designed as a Hotêl Particulier. The apartment occupies the 1st floor, originally the floor of the rooms – 11 rooms, one of them used as a bathroom. Being a social floor, almost all the walls and ceilings of these rooms were decorated with rich wall paintings.

On the historical blue facade, a golden metallic cover announces the singularity of the space. Once inside, the wood, the stone and the steel on a green-brownish palette flood the space. Thanks to this moodboard selection, the brand soul and philosophy is breathed in every corner.
Alentejo Restaurant is a restaurant chain of typical dishes of the region that gives it its name.
Contacto Atlântico was responsible for the creation of the conceptual design of the entire network and its development, which always takes place inside shopping centers.
The chosen color palette, textures and geometries will transmit a sophisticated and natural air, recalling the calm landscapes of the southern Portuguese region. Thus, the wood will empower the furniture and the pavement, leaving the leading role to green tiles on the walls.
